What Does Splinterlands Have To Do? | Splinterlands #348

With all the chatter and excitement seemingly back into the crypto sphere, I guess we all are patiently waiting to see if that hype and FOMO will bleed over to the Web 3.0 landscape. I don't know what it will take to have a similar NFT bull run that was held in 2021, but what's evident is the euphoria is back in crypto.

This got me thinking, when last have I done an assessment on my splinterlands investments and their respective APRs? As a traditional gamer and Web 3.0 gamer, it is frequently a difficult mindset to balance -- do you care about the money you spend on a Web 3.0 game vs. what's the value of the investment doing? I think this will be a continuously difficult mindset to break if we want to go mainstream with Web 3.0 games.

Every day we see normal gamers complaining that Web 3.0 is a scam. Hell, there is even a site, https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com/ (a great one at that), dedicated to highlighting all the scams and rug pulls that go on daily in the Web 3.0 ecosystem. According to the site, it has tracked $72 billion+ that has been lost to scams, rug pulls, NFT fraud etc., across all Web 3.0 categories. I don't blame normies when they read and see these articles pop up -- they immediately label Web 3.0 as scammy and only for crypto bros.

Bull Case for Splinterlands

I am no crypto bros, but I do believe splinterlands bucks the trend of what you see on the web3isgoinggreat site. Last week I wrote a bull case for SPS and in the post, I explained why I think SPS is primed for a bull case run. However, after writing the post, I was left wanting to write more about why I think splinterlands has all the fundamentals that many Web 3.0 games wish they had.

  • Track record - splinterlands has been going on for almost 6 years and therefore has survived and rode a few crypto bull and bear markets.
  • Legitimacy -- the splinterlands dev team, founders (and ex-founders) are all legitimate people who are passionate about building a tactical card game utilizing blockchain technology.
  • Gameplay -- splinterlands is a real game that on the surface is so simple, yet so deep with its many rulesets, and cards that you have community on a weekly publishing article on everything about the game and all the strategies and techniques that you can use. Many Web 3.0 "games" are just glorified spreadsheet simulators.
  • Community -- 140k discord members and many content creators on the Hive ecosystem that are publishing articles and videos about the game daily.
  • Tokenomics -- in the bull case for the SPS article, I wrote about the solid tokenomics that splinterlands has spent the best part of 5 years getting right. Many Web 3.0 projects start with a huge pump and once the dust settles -- the tokens die a slow death as do many alts.

There's more to the list above, but again nothing new. The elephant in the room is why are we not seeing the mass adoption of splinterlands. With the crypto ecosystem pumping, we should see an influx of users, right? Maybe in time, there will be a spillover effect, but I know many new players who got burnt during the 2021 NFT bull run and were paying extraordinary prices for splinterlands assets at the time. So maybe people are hesitant to invest more money into the game, but that's the not core of the users we want to attract. Splinterlands needs to attract new users to bring new money into the game and not rely on existing users to continually fund the game.

Back in Sept 2021, I wrote a piece comparing the two biggest Web 3.0 games at the time, where I looked at Alien Worlds vs Splinterlands. At the time both games had the highest number of users playing both games. Axie Infinity was also pumping at the time and had the highest market cap of all Web 3.0 games, but I was purely looking at the number of users playing daily.

Missing Pieces for Splinterlands

All the reasons stated in the above article, still stand true to today for splinterlands -- but why aren't we seeing the adoption of splinterlands? I don't know the reasons because if it was simple, the splinterlands dev team would've resolved it already. I think it is naïve to say that if splinterlands did these things, the masses would come:

  • Does Splinterlands need more traditional marketing?
  • Splinterlands needs to make the game available on Steam and Epic game stores.
  • Splinterlands mobile needs work to attract an untapped user base.
  • Splinterlands needs more Twitch streamers with a huge following to stream the game.

Again, I am going to repeat myself -- I know it's naïve for me to say these reasons as if they are silver bullets, but it's still fascinating to think about. I am only a community member writing about the game, but if you have any ideas, we need to get them in front of the big splinterlands content creators or raise them as questions in the splinterlands town hall. It will only benefit everyone if splinterlands has another bull run adoption!

Getting back to the two major things on the go for me in splinterlands, tracking returns on the 2 Land plots and getting to 100k SPS staked. With the increase in the SPS price, we have clawed back almost a 2/3rds of an entire year on the payback period and the APR has increased by almost 1%. Also, had a good week claiming end-of-season rewards and staking all SPS earned from Land and rewards.

Land Overview

  • Total Spent: $267.524
  • Amount Regained: $4.86 (162.59 SPS post-tax) (+$0.81)
  • Payback Period: 8.17 years (+0.65 years)
  • Annual Percentage Rate (APR): 24% (+0.9%)

*(calculated based on an SPS harvest rate of three per day and an assumed SPS price of $0.0299)

SPS Staked

  • SPS Staked: 55365.489 SPS (+ 609.418 SPS)
  • Progress to 100k target: 55.37% (+ 0.62%)
