Blog of the Month - May 2023/ Education by @mercmarg

The subject of education is always on the table at any given moment, generation after generation. Changes in education have occurred in different areas, changes in curricula, changes in school schedules, as well as a series of elements that become part of it.

I did my primary education in a private school, it was close to my house from the 1970's onwards, in those times the work of the parents to take us by the hand to school was not very necessary. My mother would stand at the door of the house and watch us from there. We had two shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..

This schedule was given in this school, public schools only one set schedule.

Few subjects were studied, there was not enough space for much. The curriculum changes came in the 80's with changes of names, I remember a subject that was given to the children called Learning to Think, I knew it because I studied Bachelor in education something like a medium technical level and in my internships I had to know this subject that was a little crazy because even the teachers could not find how to explain it to the children (imagine me being a student and helping in it with the children).

No technology, few libraries and the high school library with few resources to review the necessary topics.

When I became a teacher this look at education was more focused because the responsibility was no longer my education but to be in charge of many children who had to be oriented in reading, writing and numbers, plus the part of geography, history, crafts etc., etc.. A challenge for a teacher whose concept was that as a professional teacher she had to know everything. The study continued and of course as a teacher I had to follow the planning imposed at that time.

In the 90's we were innovated with the classroom projects process that we also had to follow a line of action, that was a torment for all the teachers of the schools, it mattered more how we wrote it than the results that were achieved with the participation of the children. This procedure was intended to make the children more independent in the subjects they chose to study, but it had to include writing, reading and all academic areas. In short, it was a challenge for many.

With my children I really feel that in my preparation in elementary school we were more independent...on the contrary, they depended more on the accompaniment that one as a mother gave them at the time of doing their homework as we call it.

At the university level I also experimented in this field, with more resources in the library, however, many topics were left undeveloped. Then with the advent of technology, teachers with that fear of change to incorporate technology into education when I realize that didactically it was not used as intended. The students only took pictures, gossip, etc., but working on a blog said that they did not understand the process. I would sit down to study and understand how it was done and then incorporate it into them, when they asked me something I knew how to answer.

Nowadays, I feel that the changes are too many, I think that it is not because of the curriculum, that they have removed subjects or incorporated others. I think it is the system of life and the changes of policies in the schools towards the development of the activities. There are many gaps, even if the children in these new generations are very alert, I feel that they are very dependent or the subjects are not very appealing to them when they study them. Maybe they don't like the process of subjects like math, physics, chemistry and they already come with traumas towards them.

If there are those who love it and are rather self-taught, here the teachers must be more up to date than before.

I also feel that in general terms, at least in high school from what I've seen with my son and friends, the new generations are less interested in the basic subjects, of course, not in all cases. Perhaps it is that they have access to so much information that awakening their interest is more difficult than in our time. But I also feel that few teachers help themselves with the technology available to them.

This is a relevant point in the new generations, the amount of information they have access to.

Thank you

Hello Mercedes it has been interesting to read you because you have raised it as a student and then as an educator that is to say from two positions, I am concerned about how young people see education now, many see it as a nuisance or boring, the important thing is the cell phone, the networks, I as a young person I was also bored, but I was aware that studying was something fundamental for my future, I remember having teachers and teachers of quality, many of those who taught my son left much to be desired, much of education will depend on parents to reinforce the important things at home.

A lot has changed indeed from then to now. Back in the day, children are more independent and can do school tasks and or assignments on their own. Nowadays, parents have to guide them all through.

The truth is that I don't know if it's laziness or children's comfort, in my time I remember that I read as many times as it was necessary to understand the task.

Thank you, thank you very much
