A Day at the Vet: When Allergies Turn into Unexpected Expenses

As I sat in the vet's waiting room today with my French Bulldog, Funs, I realized something.

Taking a pet into your home is often more of a marathon than a sprint.

Many people don't realize how crucial and important it isᅳfor the dog and for yourselfᅳto choose the right breed.

We did thorough research before coming to the conclusion that a French Bulldog would be a perfect fit for our family.

Looking for example, at the temperament of the dog and our way of life.

However, it is important to consider factors other than just cuteness.

Consider possible medical conditions and typical behavioral problems, such as persistent or excessive barking.

Dogs require a lot of time and care.

Even without considering feeding and cleaning, walks, training, playtime, and grooming can easily add up to two hours or more per day.

Sun, rain, or snow, can you handle this dedication?

Besides, a dog is a friend for life.

For their physical and mental health you are responsible, including veterinary care, training and a warm, safe forever home.

Are you set up for a 10- to 15-year commitment?

Financially, owning a dog goes beyond the purchase price.

It costs money for food, accessories, veterinary care, vacations and training. Can you afford these ongoing costs?

Funs' visit to the vet today is a perfect illustration.

We knew Funs needs daily medication and that French Bulldogs are prone to allergies.

But it went beyond allergies this time.

IMG_8288.JPG

We worried about irreversible vision loss when a blurry film and pus appeared in his left eye.

A veterinary examination cost $3.97 and found minor injuries, perhaps from a branch.

Slight injury, probably from a branch, was discovered during a veterinary inspection; the cost of the examination was Є3.97 and the medication Є209.66.

In addition, we found a lump on his testicle.

While we hoped for the best, the veterinarian took a sample for examination (puncture - Є48.61) and warned of a possible skin cancer, which is common in French Bulldogs.

Surgery could soon follow.

The cost of nail trimming increased by Є38.50. The total? Є300.74.

Although the cost stings, we accepted this as a responsibility when we took Funs into our family.

Besides unforeseen costs, there is also a lot of joy, love and companionship. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

While caring for Funs is crucial, self-care is just as important.

After the vet visit, I went to the gym.

Due to a cold, I skipped a few days, but I was determined to get fit and healthy as soon as possible.

My personal trainer recommended doing three or more workouts a week to burn more calories and get faster results.

Although last week's extreme muscle discomfort limited the way I moved, it also served as a reminder to push myself beyond my comfort zone and push my limits.

This is an essential part of muscle growth.

Our gym has the saying “no pain, no gain” on the locker room wall and I can relate to that.

But it is crucial that I put my health first.

This was confirmed by my most recent physical therapist appointment.

My goal is to minimize the risk of injury and maintain optimal performance through regular physical therapy sessions.

Maintaining your dogs is way more expensive, and people don’t often realize that.

I hope funs is doing better now

Great post! Dogs are a big commitment and as they get older those vet bill get bigger too! I'm glad you're taking good care him, sounds like he's having a few issues. That sagging lower lid is really drying out his poor cornea, that lube should help a lot!

I think you're doing great with your workouts, no pain, no gain unless you injure yourself. I'm glad you have a therapist helping with that part.

Thanks!

He definitely is a commitment, but he's worth every penny (and vet bill).
Yeah, that droopy eyelid is a hassle, but hopefully the lube will keep things from getting worse.

Workouts are definitely a challenge.
Thanks for the encouragement! 💚
