The town that time forgot

My Chicago kids spent a few days last week visiting Galena, Illinois and filling our family photo albums with some fresh new pictures.

Just an hour away from my home in Wisconsin, Galena has always been one of my favorite places to visit. When I was a kid both my father and grandfather worked on construction projects there, putting in the sewer pipes and building a levee around the town to protect it from flooding.

My family history with the town goes back many years. But the origins of the town go back even further to when the first miners started digging for lead back in the early 1800s. Galena became a bustling town while Chicago was still a little village along the swampy shore of Lake Michigan. The Galena business district is little changed from the early days when the stores supplied the items that the miners needed, although the retail selections are much different today than they were then.

85% of the buildings in town are on the National Register of Historic Places. Ulysses S Grant worked in his father's leather shop, before he went on to become the 18th President of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln participated in one of the presidential debates with Stephen A Douglas from the balcony of the DeSoto Hotel. You can rent a beautifully decorated room in the old hotel for around $150 per night.

The town has a feeling about it of being forgotten by time.

It may be that the city gives the feeling of being forgotten by time, but your images give me serenity and peace. It's like riding a time machine or going through a quantum portal and going to a magical place full of history.
I really enjoyed this content of yours which has impeccable images.
Greetings from this side of the planet.

85 percent historical buildings would be really a big number. Historical buildings and monuments are my weakness.

I love the old family pics! I'm scratching my head trying to remember if I have ever been to Galena. Seems like I should have been. Been to Dubuque several times so seems likely. I like civil war history and have read US Grants memoir which is quite interesting but not a very easy read haha. I love the old downtowns with the brick storefronts

Great reportage with history. We had a funny incident in the city. When the cinema was being repaired and the signs were removed, a similar mosaic with inscriptions from the last century was found behind it.

The buildings looks very old and I wonder how beautiful the city will look with old buildings since you said 85% of the buildings there are historical...

I enjoyed the story of history and how your father and grandfather are part of it.

To me, it is great that time forgot it as the architecture of the older buildings and vibes of the city are much more pleasant than what other places have chosen to replace theirs with.
