Turkey time

It doesn't happen often, but occasionally wild turkeys get brave enough to come up on my deck and grab a bite to eat from my bird feeder.

When the ground is covered with snow and we have had a few days of freezing and thawing, the snow becomes crusty with ice and it must make it more difficult for the turkeys to break through and find food on the ground.

It is always a bit startling to glance out the window at the feeder and see these giant birds on my deck. The regular feeder visitors do not come around while the turkeys are having a snack!

I was able to get a close up view of this Tom's legs as he stood on the deck railing and see his vicious looking spurs that he uses during mating season to fight off the competition.

It was raining and it was rather funny to see this big old guy shake himself off like a dog, before he hopped down and went on his way!

My security camera caught a bit of the action.

That is really cool! Wild turkey's are really skittish, when I lived in areas there were a lot of them they so rarely would close to houses. That must have been a lot of fun to see that big old guy eating the bird food!

I notice you have significantly less snow right now, I hope it has been warming up for you too!

It has been getting above freezing every day, thank goodness, because we have been getting rain everyday and we would be buried up to our eyeballs by now!

These guys must have been really hungry!

I think the video is good enough you could take it to the cops and they could catch these two burglars 🤣 Nice captures. The turkeys around here are pretty scared of people. In California, they were kind of indifferent. I don't think they ever got shot at in Cali lol

Everyone has their nemesis. My mom didn't like snakes so she kept a loaded (!!!!!) 410 shotgun in the hall closet for quick snake emergency duty. I don't think she ever fired it lol

I'll buy my turkey's from the grocery store! No way am I plucking feathers.
I've never lived anywhere that there were poisonous snakes, but your mom probably has good cause to be afraid of snakes.

Gos knows I can’t even get a close up view of a turkey like this
They can be very hostile and they pursue people
Have you experienced that before?

I've never seen them be aggressive. Usually when they see people they move off into the woods.

Ah that's neat! I don't think I've ever seen wild turkeys here. Every once in a while we get hawks though!

Some of the flocks around here have 20 - 30 turkeys. Once they get started in a area they seem to take over!

Its wild how animals can evolve and live through this kind of weather like is nothing, we cant even get out of the house without a coat, there are wild turkeys on the country side that is something seen very often although zero on the city, I wish when Im get older I can move out the city and probably keep working but remotely, at least I know I will be posting on Hive 😜✌️

They are bold coming up so close! I think your reason being the hard crusty snow is right. In the area I live there are a large number of wild turkeys and I love seeing them on my way into town. Never had any up close to the house though!

I think these guys must have been hungry. They came back two days in a row, but now the snow is melting and there are bare patches of ground.

I didn't know there were turkeys in the wild, I've always met them domesticated. What a unique and special moment! 🤩

Turkeys are native to North America and some areas of the US have an abundance of them. There is a hunting season for them.

Native Americans hunted turkeys and also used the feathers to decorate attire.
