BRIDGES

My father worked in construction as a crane operator and mainly built bridges. As a youngster, one of the first family road trips that I remember taking was the 300 mile drive to go and see this bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge opened to traffic in 1957, connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of the state of Michigan in the United States. At 5 miles long, The Mighty Mack is the longest bridge of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and the 5th longest suspension bridge in the world.

The fee to cross the bridge is $4 per passenger vehicle

Very cool! It's neat that you have a direct family association with that bridge. Time for me to dig out some bridge pictures!

I like bridges too (that's why I choose this subject for the #pobphotocontest of this week 😃), but driving 300 miles 'just' to see a bridge 😲
But I guess it is supercool if you helped building that bridge.

Many family road trips were to see bridges! My grandpa built bridges, too, so there was always one that Dad wanted to show us I've probably been under more bridges than most people. 😂

What a perfect bridge to pick! It's probably my favorite for sure! We have a trip planned to the state park on the Northern side of the bridge this summer. I'm looking forward to getting some good shots of it.

It is an impressive bridge! I'll look forward to seeing your post about the crossing and your time in the UP.

Lovely bridge 👍 I had to spend some time on google though... my wife went to Mackinac Island a few times when she was growing up which was famously car-free. So I had to figure out where this bridge went lol I found it and looks like Mackinac Island is still safe from cars 🙂

Yep, no cars on Mackinac! It is an important tourist feature, so I doubt if that will ever change.

You won't believe I've been trying for months to comment on one of your posts and formally introduce myself. I admire you Melinda, and all the effort you put into Hive and especially Ecency. Today is a vacation day here and I finally have time to say hello to a lot of nice people on the platform.

I loved the pictures and the little story you share with them. I'm going to follow this initiative, it seems to be one of those Hive activities that end up being a vice for me hahaha. Happy to greet you and follow you, I send you a sincere hug! ❤️

It is odd that we have both been here for so long without becoming friends! I'm happy to know you now!

This is a great contest and I'll be watching for your entries.

It's a long drive to any good bridges around here (I don't count overpasses!)

I'm only an hour from the Mississippi, so it's pretty easy to find bridges.

I would have to drive to San Pedro out by the Port of Los Angeles to see some big bridges. Traffic up that way is a nightmare!
!LOL

I do appreciate backroads and 2 lane highways! I-90 is nearby, but I avoid it whenever possible.
You have to drive through a lot of wilderness to get to the Mackinaw Bridge.

Very cool bridge and it's really neat that your father helped construct them. I've been through Michigan (via I-90) but never on this one. My oldest brother use to work bridge construction for a couple of years in Massachusetts, never seen his work as I live in Iowa.

There are some great bridges between where I am in Wisconsin and where you are in Iowa! Is your brother an operating engineer? Ironworker?

I think he was an iron worker back when he did bridges. He does crane work on buildings now I think, about ready to retire. He's my half brother we haven't talked in quite some time.

Oh yes some nice bridges over the Mississippi River on the eastern side of Iowa and some on the western side with the Missouri River 😊 If I get some time before Sunday I'll post about a walking bridge that connects Council Bluffs, IA to Omaha, NE across the Missouri River here.
