Hartwell Memorial Window by Tiffany Studios

A visit to any museum shows us some of the wonders of our world, and a recent visit to the Art Institute of Chicago was no exception!

This incredible stained glass window was designed by artist Agnes F. Northrop for Tiffany Studios more than 100 years ago for the Central Baptist Church of Providence Rhode Island. The congregation decided in 2018 to relocate the window to the Art Institute of Chicago where it could be conserved to ensure that it would remain stable and be on public view.

Moving and reinstalling the window was a monumental task and required complicated planning.. In the museum the window is back lit by a custom LED system to give the effect of changing sunlight.

Tiffany Studios is well known for 'painting with glass' using color and texture to create stunning effects to create this landscape of light.

information about the window comes from plaques in the museun

They are made of pieces of cut colored glass and held together with strips of lead.

It looks like the paintings I have seen at the door of some churches.

An already beautiful place has been made even more beautiful by the photos you took. These glass paintings are so moving.

It must take forever to cut all the pieces of glass to properly fit into the design.

It must take forever for an artist to cut all those pieces of glass to form the design they want to create!

Stunning windows! I like the detail shots. They really show the beauty of Tiffany's work. Interestingly there is not an overtly religious tone beyond the light from heaven and beauty of nature. And of course Psalms 121:2 below the window 🙂

You are right. I have seen mainly stained glass windows with religious figures. I think most of the Tiffany windows that I have seen are of nature scenes, though.

Going over such a place adds a lot to our knowledge especially seeing such special objects which are thousands of years old.

I didn't know that. I saw a Tiffany stained glass exhibit at the Met in NYC once and it was dazzling!
