Backyard Blue Jays

avatar
(Edited)

Commonly seen in backyards and woodlots in the Eastern US, Blue Jay's are a loud and colorful bird. They are Intelligent and adaptable, , and are quick to take advantage of bird feeders.

Blue Jay's are omniverous and will eat acorns, beechnuts, and other nuts, many kinds of seeds, grain, berries and small fruits.
They also eat many insects, including caterpillars, grasshoppers. and spiders. I have come to realize that they are one of the reasons that I have few opportunities to take insect photos!

These autumn leaf photos were taken today. The muted colors on this bird make me suspect that it is a youngster that was hatched this summer

Blue Jays are such cool birds. That's definitely a youngster you had there in the lower pictures. They have such pretty markings and love bird feeders! When I live on the east coast I used to get a lot of them in the backyard. Your yard looks beautiful with all the changing leaves, I miss that not being on the east coast anymore!

I'm glad they stay all year and provide winter color. We have had two nights in a row of temps down into the 20s and most of the leaves have fallen. It feels like winter is right around the corner.

In Cuba there is a migratory species called azulejo. The male of this species when it reaches adulthood turns from brown to deep blue and during this process there is a stage in which it becomes very similar to the bird you show.

We have them here, too. We call azulejos- Indigo Bunting. They are much smaller than the Jay's.

They are fun to watch! I love giving them peanuts in the shell and watching them haul them away and cache them.

I love bluejays toooo but alas for some reason I can't get your photos to load on any of my devices. Still voting anyway, cuz corvids.
Here we have scrub jays, no crest, and Stellers, big mohawk but very elusive and seldom seen.

I believe there was an image server issue overnight. Can you see the photos now?

I remember that we had Canada Jay's/Whiskey Jack/Camp robbers at the cabin in Canada. I don't think I have ever seen a Stellar Jay.

To be fair, I think this one was already in the know on how and who to manipulate. It was in a very busy public park area. But thank you!

We have several different kinds of Jay's in North America, but the Blue Jays are most common at my house. They are fun to watch.
