Benefits of Family Farming

With the economic quagmire in Nigeria, lots of homes are now farmers. Farming, from inception, has been the major source of food for us. This is our first identity, as it began even from the time of our forefathers. Even though we don't find it bad getting prepackaged food from stores, the majority of Nigeria is involved in cultivation of crops for sustenance.

As usual, we don't joke about farming in our house. My brother having a piece of land has been a great help in our having abundant garri, hahahah. A Nigerian would understand me better. It wasn't too long when we finished uprooting all our cassava, and currently, we have planted new cassava and still making ridges to plant more

This year, with the price of waterleaf, my brother found it necessary to add waterleaf and pumpkin to the vegetables. Although nurturing these plants from the pre-activities to the post-activities isn't easy, the results and aftermath are worth it.

Farming is the most important food source in our daily lives. In one way or the other, we grow crops like cassava, maize, and others. Before one thinks of farming, the first is the site selection. It is one thing to plant and another to plant in a soil that is fertile and not overused. Excessive use of a particular land non-stop for farming causes loss of soil nutrients, and this results in low productivity and stunted growth.

To avoid complete loss of nutrients, we usually allow the land to rest for two years to regain the last nutrients as that helps in productivity. Apart from our food source coming from our farm, we also buy fruits and other vegetables in the market while waiting for ours to sprout. Growing up, I believed so much in making use of scent leaf and curry leaves. It's so important that it turned into an addiction.

I can't cook rice or spaghetti without adding curry leaves to it. I love the aroma and nourishment I receive from adding it to my dish. We also have planted some plantains in the farm which give us enough bunches of plantains, leaving us with a variety of naturally processed food.

Through farming, I am sure of what I eat, how it was planted, grown, and cultivated. The joy that comes from eating so many cups of garri without thinking of the price to gauge the cups makes everyone in our house forget the labor involved in the production. Apart from family consumption, we also cultivate these crops and sell them in the market, generating money to purchase new crops to replant during the season.

It's good that farming remains in your society. Here, our farmers are old already yet no one is available to replace them for the reason that the young ones move to city to work in industrial company. Our local goods are not enough to sustain the needs of the people here. @marynn
