My Journey Through Unfair Treatment

The life of a student isn't a bed of roses for so many students. The pursuit of knowledge came with lots of unexpected pressure for me, pressure that led many colleagues of mine to comply with lecturers' demands, whether through favors or cash payments.

My academic journey was going well in year two, but everything turned around when I entered my third year, where continuous assessment depended solely on team effort and collaboration. Out of eleven courses, eight ended up being group works while just three were individual efforts.

Year three was the most demanding year in my academic life. It was from one group work to the next. The worst part is being paired with lazy group members. In one of our courses, we were given a mini project where we were asked to do a case study on the different broadcasting stations assigned to us.
As the leader of my group, I tried my best to ensure we submitted before the deadline, assigning tasks and rallying everyone to contribute. Little did I know some members went back home and relaxed, refusing to visit the station and do proper research. They sat home to inquire from people they felt know more than them and that was how we ended up with wrong information.

The research team gave the wrong information on the name of the radio manager, thinking they had gathered information from the correct source, we proceeded with the name. It was during the defense that the first group that did the same radio station we did mentioned a different name of the manager, that was when it came on us that we used the name of the previous manager. We hoped the name wouldn't be noticed, but the lecturer took his time to scrutinize the work and spotted the error.

Instead of blaming the whole group, he accused me of not performing well as a group leader and unfairly placed the entire error on my shoulders. He graded me 5 out of 30 for my Continuous Assessment (CA) and gave reasonable grades to my group members. The lowest score was 13. I felt unfairly treated, broken, and bitter about how he seemed so satisfied with giving me such a low grade. That was nothing but a clear pathway he made for my failure.

Though I was down for long, scared of what the end result might yield.
After I shook off the bad feeling, I was determined to study hard for the exam to achieve a good grade, knowing that despite our group's plea for mercy, had fallen on deaf ear.

In the end, I wrote the exam and received a 'C' grade. Despite his unfair treatment, I realized that true strength lies not in the absence of challenges, but in the courage to rise above them, no matter how daunting they may seem. It taught me a valuable lesson of never accepting something that is heard without confirming the authenticity.

That was unfair and your group mate shouldn't have neglected you with the job. I have seen people who don't like group work and this is one of the reasons. I am glad you eventually succeeded in the exam and also learned a great lesson.

After everything, we went as a group to plead him but he bluntly refused paying a listening ear. The members that caused the error felt remorseful but that didn't change anything but I was overjoyed to have passed the course.

I always say that university is always about God and luck. Most at times your efforts you even reflect in your grades because lecturers do what they want.

It’s only a few of them who actually go by the book. It is well. Life is indeed unfair.

My dear, is exactly how you described it. Imagine most of them give scripts to people who don't even have fair knowledge on the course or field of study to grade. I'm just glad I overcame the hold trouble he created with his worst intentions.

Some lecturers just close their eyes and give grades. I'm glad you found a way out, at least.

This group work of a thing can result into some kind of unpleasant experiences. I have had my share too and wouldn't want to join forces with people to do group project or assignment. It's good that after everything, you still passed the exams.

Once it grouped, some students get lazy leaving everything to others that care. I'm just glad i came out of it without an issue with a lecturer. Where do I keep strength to drag with someone who got the influence and audience.

Your lecturer did you dirty though, I know you felt bad cause you were the group leader and got the lowest score, it's unfair to be treated that way. Glad you've gotten over it

Seriously I was so pained. maybe I wouldn't have recovered from the pain if I had failed the course at last but the whole pain was replaced by joy when I saw the result pasted.

That was so serious. I wasn’t expecting it to get to that extent. That was so unfair. At least since it was a group work you all should be graded same thing regardless of the position. I am glad you were able to triumph at the end

Exactly, that how other lecturers do but he took his to another level. His expectation was for me to keep running to and fro to his office everyday so he could use that chance to request for something else but he failed. He does that to people to accept without being ashamed.

Why do I feel like the lecturer didn't like you? As it's a team effort, everyone in the group often receives the same grade. That means that the other group members would also suffer if he believed that you, as the group leader, you did not perform your duties as expected. Fortunately, that is all past, and you completed the course successfully.

Seriously, I can't explain if it was hatred or he just did that for another reason best known to him. The man is just promiscuous, the incident didn't start from that day.

Thank goodness it's all in the past now.

When you are a group leader you cannot delegate responsibility, which means that you will be held responsible for any mistake. What is reprehensible is the way you were treated. I think there must be some other reason for such severe and inexplicable mistreatment. Thank goodness that from now on you will verify the information you get your hands on.

Exactly, I did knew what he wanted but I didn't let him get that. I didn't give him the attention he expected, I had to work it out by reading effectively for the exam.
