Lovebirds don't listen to advice

Greetings everyone!

This topic for THINKER'S CORNER got me remembering a funny but true encounter I had with my neighbors some years back. Let me call them Jude and Mary; they were in love and did all the lovey-dovey things publicly; anywhere the opportunity permitted. This lifestyle of theirs dealt with me because it always reminded me of my single life.😅

They were my next-door neighbors during NYSC. I was heading the Christian fellowship in the local government, giving me the privilege of being close to them and welcoming their relationship battles. It turns out that Jude was not actually in love with Mary; he just wanted to cage her and 'enjoy' her throughout the service year.

Oh yeah, Mary knew this, but she was already in love, the type of love that generated the phrase "love is blind."

Due to leadership demands, I didn't stay home often, especially during the daytime. I would get home at night around 7:00 pm to find Mary sobbing in tears. Once she noticed me approaching, she would clean off her tears and launch into a realm of pretense. I didn't bother, I kept quiet until one day she opened up to me herself.

Shockingly, Jude beat her up twice a week. He doesn't allow her to go out or mingle with other male corpers, and the most shocking part was that Jude had access to her social media account to be checking who she communicates with.

"Mary, this is a big red flag. Leave the relationship!"
I didn't hide anything; I told her the absolute truth, even though Jude is my friend (of course, we do things together in the compound).

"Yes, that's what I would do because I'm tired. This didn't start today."

She assured me of going back to her own house the next day because it's late, and she doesn't live in the same community with us...it's only Jude that's my neighbour, Mary only lived there as Jude's girlfriend

You know, love is actually wicked! Mary didn't go back the next day. I'm sure Jude touched her "mumu" button that night that wiped her senses away.

It continued like that, and Mary didn't fail to report all the scenarios to me even when I kept telling her to leave Jude alone.
Well, based on my position as their leader, I couldn't shun her from coming to my house once I returned home. I only developed the habit of dodging and giving her excuses.

Story cut short;
I was some months ahead of them during NYSC, and after I passed out, they continued their love battle.

Because Mary got fond of reporting those issues to me, she kept calling even when I was no longer with them, and all her calls were centered on their relationship and how Jude kept beating her.

I got frustrated and shouted at her, asking if she was being worked on with voodoo.

The worst happened; she called one day to tell me that she's pregnant and Jude was denying it. She was in tears but I didn't give a damn

That was the moment I blocked her from calling me and blocked her on all social media.
