How do I run away from this issue?

Have you ever wondered about someone's attitude towards a particular subject? Of course, I'm very sure that every one of us has experienced this, and it has changed our thoughts toward some people.
Look at the current problem I'm facing, which I don't know how to handle.

Yesterday, while sitting outside, engrossed in my phone, a WhatsApp message popped up on notification. I flipped it to check, and I saw it was from a friend.
It read:
"Hope you're following up on the discussion?"
Thanks to the feature of reading messages via notification, I peacefully snubbed the message and continued my activity. However, along the way, my mind started to nag me to reply to him and tell him my mind. After all, it's my phone, my account, and my data that I bought with money.
I went on to reply, and we started talking, and he began to beg and push hard again.
What is it?
He's going to have his wedding in a few months, and he wants it to be grand. He wants me to be among the groom's top men and also be in charge of organizing the "Men in Agbada."
When he informed me on the first day of this month, I told him I would think about my availability and let him know because I have a lot of expenses on my head and I'm not ready to add more to it.
The economy right now is not smiling; the cost of living is high, and attending such an event would cost nothing less than 50 thousand naira[around $32] for the unique attire and transport.
But hey, he didn't listen; instead, he added me to a WhatsApp group where I saw a message earlier yesterday about paying 20 thousand naira[$13] for the attire/material, which we'll collect and then go and sew ourselves.
Can you see that? The attire alone is 20,000 naira, and I'm sure the cost of sewing is going to be around that amount or even greater.
You may want to say it's a small money, well that's for you. As for me, it's a big money adding it to the big expenses currently on my head.
The problem now is, I'm not certain of my availability because I have a lot on my head that I need to clear, but this guy is not calm enough to see the signs.

Even before now, due to the expensive transportation costs, I made up my mind not to travel out of my city to attend any sort of event unless it's very compulsory. This guy just appeared and started pushing me hard.
"It's easy, tell him you're not interested."
I know you want to say this, but let me tell you, it's not as easy as you may think. Telling him or convincing him that I'm not attending will give him a weird and funny thought. He believes in me so much to the extent that he wants me to coordinate the people in the group.
I don't know why some people find it so hard to see life as it is. I know it's his big day and he wants to make it as classic as possible, but hey, it's not necessary to involve everyone.
I'm still thinking about it and have yet to give him my final say. I don't want to disappoint him because I know how that feels, but at my end, it's really hard to pull through.
Gosh! The thought is giving me a headache.🙆♂️

Seriously, it's a tough and rough time to make someone get involved in an unexpected expenses. I feel what you are set ing to guard against is the responsibility that comes with such an event.
I'd advice you take your time to make him understand you financial status. That won't kill.
Honestly, attending a party in this economy is just something else. The worst comes if it's another city and also involves many engagement.

In order to reduce the expenses on your head, you can still attend the wedding as a guest while you'd inform him that you wouldn't be able to participate in the men in agbada stuff.
He should understand, hopefully because things are really expensive these days.
This is a nice idea too.
I only need to talk to him more to see things my way and hopefully he concurs

Rather than telling him that you're not interested (which indeed might give him a weird thought) just tell him that you can't afford the expenses as the country is hard, I believe he will understand with good communication 👌
The guy don't want to hear and normally, anyone doing such a thing should provide the material and give us to sew by ourselves.

You can attend the wedding as a guest without wasting all these resources.

What I think is best in this situation is to be honest but gentle. Telling him the truth about your not being able to afford the expenses and cost due to the economic situation of the country.
Yeah, that's the pending solution but how to go about it is the problem.

I actually find it hard to believe that some people still want to do big wedding with the economic state of the country. If you can't go through all those stress, you let him know the best way you can,so he won't feel offended or angry.
