Do You Even Study Bro?

Over the past month, I've been trying to fire up this little bible study project each and every Friday night. And yeah, we'll be going live again tomorrow at 8pm eastern ;)

Which brings up a topic though, that I wanted to tackle today on the blog...How do you study the bible?

So first up, I'm not theology major. But I believe the bible gives us the best answers without the need for anything external. And what does Scripture talk about 'studying' the Word of God?

Here's a few parts of the bible that I always go to when starting up any study in scripture:

Isaiah 1:18: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD...."

To me this is evident that God wants us to spend time with Him, especially in his word! He doesn't want blind faith without evidence backing is, that's why the bible is jammed packed with history lessons, life lessons, science lessons and of course, prophecy lessons. He invites us to open his Holy Bible and reason with Him.

Isaiah 28:10: "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, and there a little."

Context is so important. And anyone can come up with anything in the bible to fit their doctrine that they choose. That's why when I'm diving into the word, I'm reading the entire chapter, line upon line. Context is king, especially when you study!

Deuteronomy 19:7: "One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses shall the matter be established."

In ancient times, Moses explained to the people of Israel how to properly 'judge' someone. There had to be two or more witnesses. I use this same concept when learning doctrine. From the point above, anyone can take any line of the bible and make their own doctrine from it. But to make a point solid and have ground to stand on, I always like to see more than one 'witness / precept' proclaim it.

2 Timothy 3:16: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

Part of being a believer is that we must have faith in the word. And if we do, this verse truly reminds us that every, single, letter, jot, tittle, paragraph, book, verse...Is inspired and we must believe it all. Combine that with the above scriptures we can now dive into deeper bible study and 'Show ourselves approved...(2 Tim. 2:15)'

Revelation 1:3: "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand."

The 3 fold blessing in Revelation 1 is so powerful. We read, hear and KEEP the things written therein! It's one thing to read scripture, it's another to reflect the character of God that we learn about in his Holy Word.

But here's what we must do before anything....Pray!

Pray without ceasing! Especially as we dive into scripture and continue to learn more about God!
