How to monetize your Instagram Reels with 'Gifts'

Hive has spoiled us, content creators. 🥰 We have learned that we can own our content, and that really matters. We know that we are important and be rewarded for what we publish, while at the same time reward others.

But there are more social media platforms, and we should always be open-minded when it comes to which one we will use, and for which reason. Centralized social media platforms are still very popular, and they can become a nice second-home for us, depending on the content we publish and our personal or professional goals.

In this post, we will share details about the very recent feature of Instagram that has extended its application to countries beyond the USA. The .. Instagram Gifts!

Instagram is a photo and video-sharing app that was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The app was acquired by Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) in 2012 and is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. As of January 2023, Instagram had over two billion monthly active users. Users can post images, videos, reels, and stories on Instagram and interact with other users through likes, comments, and direct messages. Instagram also offers various features for brands, influencers, and creators, such as analytics, insights, advertising, and shopping.

I was watching Instagram Reels this morning, when I noticed this in a friend's post.

And this is what I see when I click on my own post/reel.

I immediately checked it out - and this is what I found out!

What is an Instagram Gift?

As we read, gifts are a new way for people to show appreciation to a content creator on Instagram. A user may receive gifts, but they will not earn money unless there are specific details shared.

If you have not posted any reel recently, you can click on the 'professional dashboard' from your profile to access this.

How to enable gifts

You will be requested to add your full name / birthdate / address and tax information. If you do not add those, you may receive gifts but will not be able to withdraw your earnings.

Please make sure to ask your accountant for any information regarding earning gifts from Instagram or any other earnings - and how you will need to declare it.

You can connect a bank account or a paypal address to earn the gifts amounts.

You may purchase and send gifts to other users, in a few easy steps.

The process seems to be easy to follow, but you need to be careful when inputting information about address/tax info etc. Keep in mind that you will need to declare the earnings at the end of the year, so if you have any questions it is best to consult with your accountant.

I think it is a nice move from META, I would like to have a button where we could ask support about questions.

TL;DR

Meta has extended the countries where 'gifts' are available for Instagram users who post reels. The user have the option to enable/disable the gifts in their posts. To withdraw any earnings, the users should fill in all their personal and tax information to META, and they can receive their earnings in a bank account or in paypal. Users who wish to send 'gifts' should purchase them using their android/apple pay or a credit/debit card. They can buy 10 starts for 0.29€ and each gift equals 1 start (0.029€).

Final Thoughts

I post often on Instagram, both due to my work and also due to my personal interests (photography & short nature videos). This is the reason why I enrolled to the 'gifts' and I will update you soon on how it goes.
