How Lucrative Is Your Passion Or Dreams?

A lot of people do not have passion in the jobs they're currently doing; they've read a lot, accrued many degrees in hope that they can have the world at their feet but then it turns out that competition and limited opportunities can be a buzz killer. I use to be a very good writer, being younger, I had a dream of getting my booked published to a larger audience.

Writing most of the time is firstly a passion, it rather becomes better when it is incentivized. In Nigeria, the best of authors are not incentivized, they're the ones their books never sells or gets rejected by publishing firm for not being marketable enough. See? Money! The publishers looks for genre that that has a likelihood of selling either as text or probably for commercials.

So it's all about money, but sometimes a writer wants to be heard. In Nigeria popularity is synonymous to wealth, I don't mean noterity I mean popularity. When you're popular, you have a large audience especially on the internet. It means more critic, more admirers, some people who hate what you write and also more who love what you do.

Having a large follower base either haters, critics or fans means you can influence people's choices, genres or even appetite for content consumption, appealing to a heterogeneous audience rather diversely. So for most writers, it was rather to be heard and the money was secondary. Popularity might not get you wealth but it'll earn you something decent.

I gave up studying literature to pursue journalism and boy did I regret it? I surely did and still do, reason was, opportunities were limited especially in Nigeria and the fact that I had responsibilities, real-time problems that were bigger than my passions and dreams was why I gave it all up. Nevertheless, I was a seasoned writer already, aiming to selling my poetry.

I had plans for diversify into spoken as much as written but then the Nigerian space was hostile to this form of art, which means you're left to pursue your dream at the risk of implosion. The audience won't consume such a content, and sometimes when your dreams don't pay off, they tag you a failure before they blame the environment.

There's one thing about passion. The fact that people around you didn't buy into it doesn't make you a failure. Acceptability might be a cap on the crown but then sometimes we're selling to the wrong audience without even knowing it. Value might be what people deem it to be, but then, quality is relative.

The fact that one thing sells more than the other doesn't mean the former is better than the latter sometimes people's are sentimental about their choices, sometimes what appeals is quite different than what doesn't and the truth is that validity isn't defined by feedback of only people in a certain area, exposure to a more vast audience is what eventually does.

However People who chose responsibilities over passion and dreams. This is why it's dangerous to be versatile in only one field. Over the years, I became a different kind of writer, ditching my sole passion and diversified into something else. Our dreams might not change anyone not to talk of the world but sometimes it can give us direction, sometimes it might not, it depends on us to change the narratives.

Its a big problem and the truth of the fact is that most people need money to survive in daily life. So most people also tend to base things on how well your doing in society based on money as well. For me, I prefer to ensure I am financially stable rather than focus on things like dream. Once they are stable and I have enough to maintain my normal lifestyle (frugal when possible) then I can focus on dreams.

Well sometimes people are passionate about their dreams, some people just wants this fufilment. For me, what's logical is actually being stable before I can pursue any of my passions because having financial stability really matters a lot.
