Father.....Time

I was going to do a quick video for my new 'series' but will plan on doing that tomorrow night because tonight....I'm kind of emotional.

Let me frame this for you, and work with me as we take a journey through the life of Jongo....

Tonight as soon as I crossed over back into Canada, I was very close to my dad's home. He lives about 20 minutes from Buffalo, New York on the Canadian side so I made it a priority to spend some time with him.

My father and I, have had an interesting relationship. Growing up, I was really bitter towards him and had a lot of anger directed his way, mainly because he wasn't around that much.

Nothing unusual, millions of other kids deal with the same thing...But when mother and father don't work out, the kid is left wondering what happened....

My mom and him ended up getting a divorce right when I was entering my teenage years, so you know what that meant....Rebellious teenager! Angry at Dad!!!

And it wasn't like he didn't try...I saw him regularly but it just wasn't the same without him in the home.

But as soon as my oldest son was born, we mended things fairly quickly. And since then, we've had a great relationship. So it's never too late, call your parents tonight if you have a chance :)

But tonight, reminded me of how quickly life comes at you.....

My Dad drove to meet me at a local truck stop for a late night dinner. He was very interested in seeing my truck and we had a great time this evening.

But I noticed.....He was getting weaker. Age had finally hit my father, and he seemed as cheerful as ever, but something was off....

Growing old! Life.

It hurts me to know that I live so far away from him, and I can't spend more time with him like I did this evening but because of this new job of mine....I hope this becomes a regular thing now.

Meeting with my pops for dinner when I'm around the Toronto area!

Before I was a truck driver, I saw him once maybe every year or two...Last time I saw him was 2020. So hopefully, this will be the start of regular meetings with him.

It's so important for me now to see him as much as I can....Because father time takes no prisoners. And I know, this isn't the kind of post you may be used to reading from yours truly, but tonight I just had to express it.

I'm so grateful for him and everything he's meant to me. Thankful that I have the opportunity now to spend more time with him when I'm in town. And sure, it might only be for a few hours here and there....

But it's worth it!

Like I mentioned above.....

If your parents are still living, give them a call tonight. Let them know you love them and spend as much time as you can with them.

You just never know...

I know what you mean. Living far apart, I never get down to calling them as much as I would like.

Unfortunately, my relationship with my father has been a toxic one of late and that his objectives were really not in my best interest or that of my children. It hurts me to know that he does not have long to go anymore but I cannot spend time with him.

I am glad you are spending some time with your dad. I don't visit my parents as much as I would like and I am also glad that you were able to finally get back into Canada.

Yeah I was grateful for the hour we spent. I'll take it any chance I can.

I totally get you. I've been living away from home for the past 17 years, and only got the chance to visit my parents every 2 years or so. Each time, I notice how much time i've spent away just looking at their faces. They are growing old, and so are we. I'm happy to be able to spend a more time with them now as the kids and I are taking a vacation after 4 years (no thanks to the pandemic).

Glad you're able to spend some time with your dad.

It's so true!

And that seems about how much I see my Dad too, about once every 2 yers or so.

Spending time with loved ones, being family or friends, should always be a priority. I'm fortunate to live really close to my parents, so I see them pretty regularly. Cheers! !BEER

Spending time with one's father is something that I have done a lot
I have been spending good times with my father since cradle
It's a beautiful thing you know...
Good to hear that!

For sure agree with you here man. The other challenge is when your mom keeps your dad from you because she’s a bitch and they aren’t divorced. That’s the pickle I’m in and it kills me. I was lucky in that I worked with my dad every weekend for about 6 years so I got so much more exposure and experience with him to become so much closer than I would have been otherwise but seeing him getting older is tough. I found this great and touching meme the other day and it’s completely true and tugs at your heart strings for sure.

I clashed with my father a lot growing up. As life unfolded as an adult, I started to realize in his quiet way, he just kept being there and our relationship improved. I was so grateful for that when we lost him as fast as we did. He was diagnosed with cancer and passed in less than a month. I couldn't get back the earlier time, but I can treasure the time I did have with him.

Regrets are not treasures, memories are.

This is really nice, Jon! I am happy that you got the chance to spend some time with your Dad.
And will get to spend more time with him when you're on the road. I think sometimes I take the time with my Dad for granted because we live together and get on each other's nerves.

Good Morning, Jon!
Thanks for that. Now I don't feel so guilty.😂
I am also grateful that my sister takes him up to spend time with her for a week or so several times a year.
I forgot before I moved back in with him how polar opposite we are personality-wise.
So, if you need to commiserate with someone... we are here to listen.
Have a great day and stay safe out there, @jongolson!
