Nigerian Custom: "Where is the computer"?

I enjoy writing, but the keyboard hasn't entirely been my favorite toy for writing of late. There is just too much to deal with mentally and physically but I will get through it, somehow I always find my way around circumstances that aren't favorable or challenging.

Recently I shared my experience about Rediscovering Nigeria: A Journey Back After 15 Years, in that post I mentioned I will be writing about Nigerian Custom: "Where is the computer"? So here it is as I drop it on your plate.

Owning a computer in Nigeria

On a few occasions, I have read articles by Jose, where he mentioned should the police see crypto-related Apps on your phone, things can get very ugly for you.

So when I was about to travel to Nigeria from Benin, I deleted all crypto-related Apps on my phone, I wish I could take my laptop with me so I can work but I feared traveling with my laptop, eventually, I refused to take my laptop with me even though my sisters said it should be fine if I have the receipt of my laptop with me.

So while I was detained and immigration going on about me not being a Nigerian, there was a case of a laptop which I don't how it turned out but I could tell it was trouble for whoever it was that was traveling with a laptop.

I sat trying to sort out my issue with the immigration boss in his office when he heard some of the immigration officials checking the road talk about computer.

Daily Vlog.png

You should have seen the sudden change of interest from the reaction of the man (immigration boss) sitting before me. It was like a dog that suddenly perceived a bone coming his way.

Where is the computer?

He screamed and walked out of the office leaving me to stare with a dejected expression on my face on the statement I had written which he isn't happy about.

I don't know what transpired amongst the owner of the computer and immigration outside but the reaction was enough to tell me they are against anyone in possession of a computer just as Warren Buffet is against anyone with Bitcoin.

At some point, I am going to have to pass through the border with my laptop, I have checked the cost of a flight from Cotonou to Lagos, and it is ridiculously expensive I have no idea why as it costs in the range of $500 - $700.
So through the laptop with my laptop is my only option and I have to make sure I arrive with my laptop at my destination when the time comes.

Just another of my horrible experiences traveling to Nigeria.

No answers on how solve problems facing many in Africa, travel in any foreign country always better to get advice from family and friends.

Hope better news comes your way without all the obstacles being placed in your path.

My hope level for Africa especially Nigeria is very low, I actually don't see Nigeria getting any better, I don't mean to sound harsh but if I compare South Africa and Benin to Nigeria, there's just a huge difference in various ways.

I hope better news comes soon, I am staying optimistic. Thanks for the encouragement on and off Hive.

The Socialist mentality shows through, not democratic at all. Wait and see what comes into being in the future.

Yes, and it can even be termed a bit more than socialist. There is nothing democratic in Africa, it is just a word to confuse us.

Still a long way to go with democracy...., National Woman's Day here today, who is working retail? 🙃

Had enough already but keep getting more.

Am hitting the road tomorrow, couldn't book for medicals.
Nothing works in Nigeria, it is even worse than I thought.

Will have to go straight to medical center and wait in queue most probably, ask your family.

Did you look into possibility of doing medical in Benin?

My sister was there and she said they don't let you in without having an appointment.
How the hell do one get an appointment when the phones and the emails aren't going through?

I travelled to Lagos today, am not leaving until the medical is done.

Poor Benin doesn't have NZ appointed medical centre.

Those guys are a nightmare. Truth is, they know you own a laptop and they'll be waiting for when they can see it. Having a laptop or an iPhone makes one a suspect and most of the time, what they're truly after is making you pay heavy bribe for something you absolutely know nothing about

I have read your articles about how they are brutal about owning smartphones or laptops, one travel was enough to confirm your experience and how they react in Nigeria.

To be frank, Nigeria has been transformed into a very tough and harsh country to reside in.

so sorry about your experience, My laptop has never left my home since i bought it because of the issue of police. As a matter of fact, the laptop seller had to send a dispatch rider to send it to me, because i didnt want to be caught by the police on my way back from the computer store with it

Thanks, it is saddening that is the situation of things in Nigeria, the other day here I went to the beach with my laptop to work. Doing that in Nigeria will be foolish of me.

Maybe I should consider sending my laptop from Cotonou to Lagos via courierr. 🤔

I will explore the option thanks for sharing that idea.

That sounds terrible. I guess you can't even keep normal electronics around because they will probably just confiscate it. What is their stance on a gaming console such as a Nintendo switch?

I have no idea what there stance is but am sure they will have something against it, if they can tell me being born and schooled in Nigeria doesn't make me a Nigeria, a Nintendo console switch is easy for them to come up with something that will have them against you.

Terrible is an understatement.

Oh my, that’s just crazy Joe…
No idea how you get there if needed with your laptop.
I hope you find a way.

Thanks for sharing these experiences.
Soon… all will change 😊
Have a wonderful evening 👋🏻

It is crazy Jackie, things are just abnormal in Nigeria.

I hope when it's time to go through the road with my laptop I will arrive safe with it.

All will change soon. !PIZZA

It is indeed Joe.

Do you need to go through there? Is there not another way…

Yes, positive thinking and all will be fine 😎
Have a great afternoon Joe 👋🏻😊

The other way is to travel from Benin, but not having a residence visa, though it is visa-free for 90 days.

Am avoiding interrogations and unescesarry issues, I just want to travel smoothly when the time comes.

That is true, all will be fine.
Thanks and you too Jackie.

Yes, I fully understand. You want to travel smoothly.
Let’s hope you find the right way to do so when the time comes.

You are welcome Joe, thank you kindly!

But this is extreme! One doesn't even have the freedom to travel with their laptop lest they confiscate it and charge a ridiculous fee to retrieve it from them. It's really crazy to say the least as even the boss is a big part of the corruption.

I hope you find a way to take your laptop with you to Lagos without any complications :)

Too extreme no law in that country, power is abused all over the place.

I hope so, it will be such a relief to successfully travel through them with my laptop.
