Buying Ram for Sallah

(Edited)

With the recent removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria, almost every commodity and service has seen a spike. This sallah period, known as the BIG Sallah, is marked by the slaughter of meat, popularly ram. Others that may afford cattle or Carmel also do.

Going to buy sallah ram means preparing your mind with a budget of N100,000 ($133) if you will be getting ram of admirable quality for a kill.
I’m from a mixed religious background, but I had the opportunity to follow my mom and sister to purchase a ram for the Sallah festival.

My younger sister had a cordial relationship with a seller who had gone to the far north to bring rams to the western part of the country to resell. This relationship was what we leveraged to get the ram we eventually bought for N70,000 ($93) without a hassle. This exact ram we bought would actually cost about N110,000 ($147) at another spot. There are usually people who buy from the main owners or rearers and resell at a much higher profit, though the buyer would be paying more.

We had choices to make and we saw other rams costlier and a few cheaper. The size of the ram often influences the cost. The cow went for as much as N500,000 ($667), and for the carmels,I did not get the opportunity to inquire.

I have always wanted to rear rams and goats, and this will be motivation for me to commence; however, I was advised to wait until after the sallah festival, when the rams would be cheaper.

Thank you for reading. I would love to have your comments and contributions.

I also love farming, but it’s not as easy as it seems. I had fish some months ago. I lost them all in one day when NEPA refused to give us light and I couldn’t change their water because of that. I’m glad you got the ram at an affordable price. Barka da sallah

Jeez, that's sad.

It's the Nigerian system.

This is one lesson I'll put to mind

Thank God you would not be needing constant water supply. But sheep hardly do well in the west because there’s too much water there( so I heard) they do better here in the North and are usually bigger. I’m not sure about this because I heard it from my mom who is NOT a farmer, so do you research before you begin. I wish you all the best!

Do they kill camel for celebration? That sounds strange to me.

The price of things have really escalated even before the subsidy was removed and the removal only made things worse.

70,000 is a good price compared to 100,000 and the fact that you didn't give us an update earlier pains me a lot.

How do we get to your place now? I haven't tasted any meat today.

You are welcome. That's good to know, mixed background gives you more advantage to understand the different religious beliefs we have in Nigeria.

Wow ... Rearing them is quite a good one but it will really be tedious on you based on your doctor career.

Everything has indeed skyrocketed and it seems we're just threading on egg shells with a lot of consciousness. Whatever you touch, the price is already doubled and yet the salaries are still stagnant.
May God help us.

Happy Sallah celebration
