I"m among those who does not believe in "luck". Oh, I don't deny probabilities, statistics, chance... but for a person to be "lucky" just means fortunate events occur, even with low proabilities.

My formula for luck is this:
opportunity + preparedness = luck

But that doesn't mean I don't like this "Lucky" Irish Penny!

This "lucky" Irish penny was minted between 1928 - 1968, so this was the last year it was made. It features a classic Irish harp on the reverse and a hen-and-chick motif on the obverse.

The penny is oversized, one of the very last "large" pennies made. It weighs just shy on an ounce.

"As long as you have a penny in your pocket, you're never broke!"

An old Irish tradition of returning a copper penny "for good luck" after making a large transaction. After the buyer and seller agree their deal, and the financial transaction is made, the seller gives a large copper penny back, often this "lucky" penny.

This tradition dates back to an older tradition, where buyer and seller spit in their hands and close the deal with a slimy handshake. EWWW. I think I prefer the copper penny tradition.

This penny often sells online for between $10 - 15 because of it's novelty, clearly making the seller the "lucky" one. I got this at my local coin dealer for $2.00. It's not in the best shape, but just as "lucky" all the same! Or so I'm told.
