Navigating Rosarito During HiveFest - Guide to Safety, Fun, and Local Interaction
As you already know, Rosarito is the picturesque backdrop for this year's HiveFest event. For foreigners attending HiveFest in Rosarito, we'll share below some useful travel tips to help you make the most of your stay in Rosarito.
Get to know the locals
Rosarito offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect place to connect with local people. When interacting with the locals, learn a few basic Spanish phrases, be polite and amicable, and appreciate genuine curiosity and respect for their culture.
Some General Travel Tips:
- Stay In Well-Traveled Areas: Stick to well-populated and well-lit areas, especially at night. Avoid wandering into unfamiliar or dimly lit streets.
- Keep digital or physical copies of ID documents on your person outside the hotel.
- Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and services. The emergency number in Mexico is 911.
- Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Make sure it's valid for your entire stay.
- Keep an eye on local news and travel advisories. Be aware of any local safety concerns.
- Mexico has strict drug laws, and getting involved in drug-related activities can lead to serious legal trouble. Drink responsibly and avoid excessive partying.
- Familiarize yourself with Mexican laws and customs. Respect local culture and traditions, including dress codes for certain religious and cultural sites.

Communications:
Getting a mobile telephone SIM card at any local OXXO convenience store is recommended. Many are located near the hotel. Most are open until 19:00 hrs.
You can normally purchase a one-week package for around 5-15 USD (or 100-250 pesos).

Transportation (Taxis):
- Always make the location of the ride clear before entering the taxi
- Always agree on the price of a taxi ride before you start your ride
- Taxi rides should cost no more than 10 USD (200 Pesos max) in the Rosarito area
- Rides to and from Tijuana Airport should cost no more than 90 USD (1,500 Pesos)
- Taxi rides to and from San Diego Airport should cost no more than 180 USD (3,000 Pesos)
- Choose Registered Taxies
- Keep 50-150 USD (or 850 - 2,500 Pesos) of change on you in smaller cash notes to have small change to pay for taxis
- There is a great app called Eiby Taxi with cheap regular taxis for travel - Download the App on Android or on iOS. (Uber works in Rosarito but is not as reliable as Eiby).
- At night, travel in groups.
Transportation (Local Buses):
Small transit-type buses run all day until 8:00 PM along the main strip. They stop anywhere and can be flagged down to pick you up. It's 17 Pesos (1 USD) per trip, and they arrive every few minutes and will get you to wherever you need to go along the main strip in Rosarito easily.
Buses to Hivefest events
During Hivefest, buses will take you from Rosarito Beach Hotel (RBH) to all Hivefest events, so you don't need to worry about transport during Hivefest itself. Just attend the events on time at RBH, and you can use the buses provided to go to the events with everyone else.
Buses will be arranged from RBH on:
- Sunday evening for the evening in Puerto Nuevo
- Monday all day for the excursion to the wine region
- Tuesday evening for the closing drinks and meal
Currency Exchange
For convenience, consider exchanging some currency before your trip, but also use local ATMs for competitive rates. There are plenty of ATMs in Rosarito that accept most major cards.
Most places accept payment in both USD and Mexican Pesos. The exchange rate is about 17 Pesos to 1 USD (for reference).

Official Hivefest Mobile app
Download the official Hivefest mobile app HERE. This contains information related to the event, such as venues and sights. The locations are shown on the maps within the App, and it is recommended to stay around the areas shown on the maps inside the App with a map.
Usually in tourist areas in Mexico as a country, is accepted the USD but the exchange rate is not good at all. Currently the official exchange rate is about 1 USD = 17 Mexican Pesos but if you try to pay in USD they will accept you the payment but the exchange rate will be lower than the official. I wouldn't be surprised if they take 1 USD for 12 to 14 Mexican pesos. And this is not because they are trying to take advantage of you, here in Mexico is not common to have bank accounts in dollars and you officially can't pay anything in dollars, so most of the people that accept it must likely end up selling those dollars cheap.
In conclusion they need to punish heavy the exchange rate to not lose money, for the inconvenience and hey if you have the opportunity to earn a little more, you take it.
I'm not going to the hivefest but I'm thinking it might be helpful to do a post about payments, bank notes and other money stuff that might help you.
