Side hustles (how to make money to buy a house in UK in 2 years)

OMG! Being young and restless, I tried most of them. For March 21, on #marchinleo, we are talking about alternate working ideas. The title is a bit of a stretch, as it was a flat (1 bedroom apartment money), 5-7 years ago. Right before Covid struck.

Matched betting. This was an interesting one if you are good at math and numbers. A funny one. At least when you start, there are offers on most of the betting websites, where they say stuff like, bet £20 on this Barcelona match and we give you a free £10 bet. Now, there are some match betting websites like smarkets.com, if I remember right, and the thing goes like this.

You bet £20 that Barcelona will win. You do exactly the opposite bet on the matched betting website that Barcelona will lose, and both bets cancel each other. You may lose 1% of the bet value during the matching (math is not perfect, it is just an approximate bet. Then you are rewarded the £10 free bet. This is where you make the money. You look for the closest matching bet for profit, and you use the free bet on the website to bet for example that Real Madrid will score 4 times next game. Then, on the matching website, you bet Real Madrid will not score 4 times next game. Do you get me by now? But this time you had a free bet, so, this one is matched, and losing or winning doesn't matter, as the result will usually bring you £7-8 in your account. This is your profit. You moved £2-300 for a £7-8 profit. The trick is to have accounts on every betting website and do this like 1000 times per month, getting 7-8 x 1000 = £7-8.000

Now, this is a full-time job, if you are to do it for 1000 times a month, which is more or less 33 times a day. There are also websites, at least in the UK, that for a £5 month are searching all the free offers and present them to you every morning, in a list, so you can just follow the list, do the matches, and wait for the rewards.

There are a few issues, anyway. First, to do 33 matched betting per day, you need to be organized, and do only the ones playing that day, as you may use £4-5000 to move around betting sites and match betting websites every day. You get the money back at the end of the day when all bets settle, still, moving so much money around every day may stress you, and yes, you need a separate card or bank account for this, not your normal one that you use for daily shopping. Be prepared.

Second, you need to do normal betting too, not only the free rewards ones, in a 1-1 proportion at least, so one normal match bet for every free reward match bet, or even more, as the online websites will eventually catch up that you are a matched bettor, and they will stop giving you freebies.

That being said, at least in the UK, this is a fun activity to do for 1-2 years, by then most of your good online websites will 'soft ban' you and you need to stop, but if you have $100-150K out of it, this is a flat that you can buy and rent if you are dedicated. Do not make more money only to spend it on junk.

Short plan:

  1. New bank account.
  2. £4-5000 to play with it.
  3. Know your matching websites, there are 3-4 of them, but you cannot spread your money that much, so you will probably only use two. Smarkets.com used to be the best 5 years ago.
  4. Make an account on oddsmonkey to use their tool to search for free bets. This is the tool is was talking about.
  5. Is boring as hell and is a daily grind, and you need to be careful all the time as a number typed wrong will make you lose money.

That was my experience.

All the best,
George
