Today I will start the post with a quotation.

"There is nothing permanent except change." — Heraclitus.

The changes are part of our lives; even nature teaches us about change, and the changing seasons every year are the perfect example. We have observed a drastic change in our lives during the Covid pandemic. The changes happened to our lifestyle and the way we work. Nobody thought of the day when a tiny virus would stop movement worldwide, and the world would stand still. To eliminate physical contact, almost all companies started working from home. People attended the office remotely, and all meetings and reviews were conducted over video conferences. The concept was not new but was not available for all employees or offices. But now, the facility was available for all.

Every change has some advantages and disadvantages, so working from home also comes with some merits and demerits. The first good point is the elimination of the need for traveling. Working from home means no need to visit the office, which translates to no need for commuting. This leads to additional benefits. Commuting short distances in metro cities like Bangalore and Delhi takes more time compared to less crowded cities. Working from home gives the freedom to travel, and employees may have spare time for other activities. Not traveling also saves money. My work profile is such that I am not able to work from home, as production and design work together to produce items. My brother is in the IT sector, and as per my knowledge, working from home perfectly suits the software development sector. He lives abroad, and before the pandemic, he switched his job. The new job has a big advantage that most of their employees work from home only. They have to log in to the system on time and complete the tasks as per time requirements. Recently, he visited India for three months, but he was on leave for one month only out of three. For the rest of the days, he was working from home. The long stay in India for three months was not possible without working from home. My brother was able to manage it very nicely, but his wife was on leave as her company does not have provisions for working from home.

These are some direct advantages, but there are some serious disadvantages as well, and the first one is the exploitation of employees. This may not be the culture in other countries, but in India, it is. I have seen some of my friends working from home, and after a couple of weeks, they were frustrated because their manager wanted them to be available around the clock. Assignments were given to them with timelines that they could not meet during normal working hours, so they were forced to extend their work hours. As they were working from home, their managers took it for granted. So, if someone is working from home, they are taken for granted as working 24x7. They were supposed to get more time for family, but instead, they are spending more time working.

Changes are an important part of life and are necessary for improvement. They shape the way we adapt to our surroundings and grow. Adopting changes is mostly not easy, but it's always good how quickly we adapt, as today or tomorrow, we have to accept it. No doubt, the changes in work culture, especially the work from home, benefit both companies and employees if we draw a limit or line.
