Do it yourself maintenance / Mantenimiento tipo hágalo usted mismo

This time I want to share with you a monthly maintenance that must be done to vehicles, because of the poor quality of gasoline in recent days in Venezuela. You don't need to hire a specialist for this, you can do it yourself with a little help.

Esta vez quiero compartirles un mantenimiento mensual que debe hacersele obligatoriamente a los vehículos, a causa de la mala calidad que presenta la gasolina en los últimos días en Venezuela. No hace falta contratar un especialista para ello usted mismo lo puede hacer con un poco de ayuda.

Lately I had noticed that when I filled up with gas, the next day it was hard to start the vehicle and a neighbor told me that this was happening because the gas filters were clogged due to the poor quality of the gas.
I am used to call my trusted mechanic when I need to make a repair, but my neighbor encouraged me to get to work and so I did.

In these times we need to save money and if we can do something on our own, well, besides learning, we are avoiding those routine expenses that the vehicle requires for its best performance.

The first step was to make the decision to do it. I bought the gas filter which cost 5$ and the small filter that goes in the gas pump which cost 2$, I asked my neighbor to lend me his "alligator" cat and help me to take out the gas pump, because this is the most delicate part of the job.

Últimamente haba notado que cuando echaba gasolina, al día siguiente costaba para encender el vehículo y un vecino me dijo que eso estaba sucediendo porque se le tapaban los filtros de la gasolina a causa de la mala calidad de ésta.
Yo estoy acostumbrado a llamar a mi mecánico de confianza cuando necesito hacer alguna reparación, pero mi vecino me animó a poner manos a la obra y así lo hice.
En esta época necesitamos ahorrar dinero y si podemos hacer algo por nuestra cuenta, pues además de aprender, estamos evitando esos gastos rutinarios que el vehículo requiere para su mejor funcionamiento.
El primer paso fue tomar la decisión de hacerlo. Compré el filtro de gasolina que costó 5$ y el pequeño filtro que va en la bomba de la gasolina cuyo costo fue de 2$, le pedí a mi vecino que me prestara su gato "caimán" y que me ayudara a sacar la bomba de la gasolina, porque esta es la parte más delicada del trabajo.

Last Sunday morning we got down to business.
My neighbor removed the fuel pump, which is located at the base of the back seat of my aveo. It's not complicated, you just have to be careful to remove the plastic seals that are in the mouths of the hoses that are connected to the pump. It is also important to tilt the pump so as not to damage the float when removing it from the tank.

El pasado domingo en la mañana pusimos manos a la obra.
Mi vecino sacó la bomba de la gasolina, que está ubicada en la base del asiento trasero de mi aveo. No es complicado, solo hay que estar pendientes de extraer con cuidado los retenes plásticos que se encuentran en las bocas de las mangueras que están conectadas a la bomba. También es importante inclinar la bomba para no dañar el flotante al sacarla del tanque.

We then proceeded to disassemble the pump casing in order to expose the small filter at the bottom of the pump. When we took out the filter we realized that it was very dirty. It had a very fine mud that prevented it from doing its job of filtering the liquid.

Seguidamente se procede a desmontar la carcasa de la bomba a fin de dejar al descubierto el pequeño filtro que lleva en la parte inferior. Al sacar el filtro nos dimos cuenta que estaba muy sucio. Tenia como un barro muy fino que impide que haga bien su trabajo de filtración del líquido.

Then the new filter was installed and the pump was repacked as it was originally. I confess that it is easy to do the count but this part is delicate because everything works under pressure and you have to use a screwdriver to loosen each one of the locks.

Luego se le colocó el filtro nuevo y se volvió a embalar la bomba tal como estaba inicialmente. Les confieso que es fácil hacer el recuento pero esta parte es delicada porque todo funciona a presión y hay que usar un destornillador para ir soltando cada uno de los seguros.

While my neighbor was changing the filter on the gas pump, I started cleaning the bottom of the tank through the pump hole. I used an old flannel to wipe and wring out the gasoline from the bottom of the tank. At the bottom of the tank there was a dark layer of soot that I was removing little by little with the flannel.

At the end I filled a soda bottle with the contaminated gasoline from the bottom of the tank and it looked like a Pepsi soda because of its dark color.

Mientras mi vecino le cambiaba el filtro a la bombe de la gasolina, yo comencé a limpiar el fondo del tanque a través del orificio de la bomba. Usé una franela vieja para ir limpiando y escurriendo la gasolina del fondo del tanque. En el fondo se veia a cumulado una capa oscura como un hollin que con la franela iba quitando poco a poco.
Al final llené una botella de refresco con la gasolina contaminada del fondo del tanque y parecia un refresco de pepsi por su color oscuro.

I now proceeded to change the fuel filter at the bottom of the car. I had never done this before but my neighbor explained to me that I had to loosen the nut, undo the fixing base and then detach the inlet and outlet hoses.

I lifted the car with the jack and made sure it was secure and safe so I could get under the car. Then with an adjustable wrench I loosened the set screw and removed the base.

I detached the hoses and removed the filter, when I shook it on the floor it came out dark liquid, indicating that it was clogged with dirt. I placed the new filter but when I adjusted the hoses I realized that it did not have the retainers but they had placed plastic straps to tie them (tirrap). I adjusted the hoses with the tirrap and that was it.

Ahora procedí a cambiar el filtro de gasolina de la parte inferior del carro. Esto nunca lo había hecho pero mi vecino me explicó que debía aflojar usa tuerca, soltar la base de fijación y luego desprender las manguera de entrada y salida.
Levanté el carro con el gato y me aseguré que quedara bien sujeto y sin peligro para poder acceder por debajo del carro. Luego con una llave ajustable solté el tornillo de fijación y saqué la base.
Desprendí las mangueras y saqué el filtro, cuando lo sacudí en el piso salió líquido oscuro, lo que indica que estaba tapado de sucio. Coloqué el filtro nuevo pero cuando ajusté las mangueras me percaté que no tenía los retenes sino que le habían colocado cintas plásticas para amarrarlos (tirrap). Ajusté las mangueras con el tirrap y listo.

To finish with the maintenance, I took out the four spark plugs and cleaned them with gasoline. I have always done this job and that's why I did it quickly.

It was time to start the car, I passed the switch several times to charge the pump and then it started with a little failure. But I had to turn it off because one of the hoses of the newly installed filter had come loose. I solved the problem by putting another strap to hold both ends to prevent it from coming off. I turned it back on and now it was perfect.

Well my friends, I was very afraid to do these things but it is worth a try and I learned for future maintenance and I saved about 40$.

Para terminar con el mantenimiento, le saqué las cuatro bujías y se las limpié con gasolina. Este trabajo siempre lo he hecho y por eso lo hice rápidamente.
Llegó el momento de encender el carro, le pasé el switch varias veces para que cargara la bomba y luego arrancó con un poco de falla. Pero lo tuve que apagar porque se había soltado una de las mangueras del filtro recién colocado. Lo solucioné colocandole otro tirrap que sujetara ambos extremos para evitar que se saliera. Encendí nuevamente y ahora si quedó perfecto.
Bueno mis amigos, yo tenia mucho miedo de hacer estas cosas pero vale la pena intentarlo y ya aprendí para próximos mantenimientos y me ahorré alrededor de 40$.
