The Flicker Haven Farm Files-Impending Flower Harvest

And just like that it's almost the end of June. Aside from picking snow peas and shelling peas, we are at the in between time of harvesting things.

Which to be honest, is kinda nice. Because there is always a surplus of to do's to get done during the summer months, so along with all the transplanting, seeding, weeding, and fertilizing chores, we've been doing a ton of cleaning, mowing, farm building and vehicle maintenance, and a ton of other things.

Because we are taking a sabbatical from large livestock, all the fields needed to be mowed before the knapweed bloomed. The hubs has been out with the tractor brush hogging the fields. This development has made the wild turkeys quite pleased, and I have enjoyed wandering through the freshly mowed fields and gazing upon the endless flocks of wild birds enjoying the seed heads and exposed grasshoppers.

In about two weeks time or so, depending on the heat, we will be cutting and drying the lavender crop. This year we also added a ton of other flowers for cutting and drying, and my first flush of sunflowers is getting close to blooming.

IMG_0030.jpg

Cutting and drying flowers is a thing. You have to cut them at just the right time if you want them to dry nicely (i.e. not fall apart, retain their color, etc.). Around the same time the lavender crop is being harvested, it looks like I will have quite a lot of sunflowers and strawflowers to harvest too.

IMG_0031.jpg

I am not sad about this.

IMG_0034.jpg

In fact, I was pretty darn elated as I wandered around checking the eventual blooming status of it all. Well, that and I was sweet pea stoned. I swear, all it takes is one huff of a sweet pea bloom and I am in a good mood for days....

IMG_0036.jpg

That and a obligatory gaze upon the amaranth. The burgundy color slays me!

IMG_0039.jpg

But I am always brought back down to earth by a quick glance at the zucchini plants. There are little baby zukes present already, which means my work load is going to be spectacular right after the fourth of July.

IMG_0037.jpg

Thank the stars for the potatoes! Any time I feel the crush of harvest work upon my being, I just glance at my potato plants and smile. I love how they have to hang out and cure in the ground for a bit. Or in the bag. My bag growing experiment potatoes look right nice these days:

Speaking of nice looking things, one of the last things I see before I go into the house for the night is my rose bush the fam got me.

IMG_0016.jpg

And on that note I'm outta here, there's buds, blooms, and a cornucopia of the homesteading things to tend to!

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's in need of a camera lens cleaning and currently sweat pea scented iPhone. The text divider image was made in Canva.

I may have a blossom on a zucchini plant, but I had so much trouble with my seedlings, nearly everything is 'way behind. Your rose bush is lovely!

With all the heat heading our way, I think those way behinds will be right up front lol! I know the feeling of feeling way behind though, hope I feel like I've caught up soon, sigh...

And thanks for the rose bush compliments, it's only been in the ground for a year, I am so happy with how they are progressing!

Those wild turkeys are fascinating, but part of me keeps wondering how I can catch one and stick it in the oven. Mmm... they must be tasty! Beautiful photography!

How'd you know they are my apocalypse food plan? LOL!

Honestly, I am so thankful for their pest management assistance, especially this year, and one of these days I will get off of my flintlocks and snap some respectable pictures that will hopefully do them justice with my actual camera instead of the phone. As it is right now, there's about twenty of them in my yard staring in the window at me!

Hope you are having a beyond splendid day!

Wow, that's an awesome view to have.

I also see a lot of wild turkeys outside the window, and they're driving cars! :D

How'd you know they are my apocalypse food plan?

That's a yummy plan! I didn't know about pest control but makes sense. Good luck photographing. Don't know how flighty they are, so hopefully they'll strike a pose.

As much as I would love to see some turkeys driving cars, I think I might be happier with my current crop of turkeys😆

The turks are great at eating pests, but they are a bit rough on the foliage with all their scratching. Guess I am going to have to get guinea fowl again for that job, they are the absolute best at bug patrol with plant damaging side effects.

And the birds that hang around here will let you walk right up to them, so I am hoping to get one of the toms to puff up for their close up lol!

Aww, I am glad you think my zukes are cutes😊

And I am so, so gleeful that you got to harvest some lavender. My field won't be ready for at least another week, we had such a delayed cold spring, followed by extreme heat, so my poor lavender field is a bit on the confused side lol! I

I am sending the love right back at ya, and I can't wait to do a post to show you all how much potatoes grew in those sacks, hopefully a ton, but I have an 80' row planted and growing as a back up lol! You know me😉

And speaking of some down time, after pressure washing the whole barn out today, I think I am ready for some, it's nap time!

Hope you are having the best, most splendid 4th weekend evah!!!

It seems the rose has the same sort of iridescence or whatever it is that makes it look like it glows when photographed. My Big rose looks the same.

Can't imagine all the flower harvesting you will be doing...
