A Peo-neat Morning

Yesterday was my birthday!

And I have to say it was beyond a most glorious day, but part of the reason I brought it up in this garden post is because my dear parents brought me a birthday peony plant!

So of course that meant I was up bright and early this morning to plant it in my front flower bed!

I have a lovely light pink well-established peony plant already in that bed, so I was super excited to add another peony friend to the realm.

And before you could say buffering, I had a hole dug in the bed for my new plant.

Now, peonies do not like their crowns too far below ground level, so I was super careful to plant the plant just right, as it's already going to take a couple years before I get any good blooms off of the plant.

You see, this year I will pinch all the blooms off of the little fella, so that the plant's energy will go to root development. Next year I will pinch half, and the following year will be a show and a half!

Once that job was done I was in such a glorious post birthday mood, that I went and planted some more plants. A bit ago I started some sweet pea seeds as they are some of my absolute favorites (I tend to say that about all flowers lol). It's supposed to rain for the next couple of days, so I wanted to get my little sweat pea seedlings into the soil before the moisture arrived.

The soundtrack to my planting was the sweet chirps of newly hatched mountain blue birds, along with some turkey gobbling in emanating out of the pine patch. It was a good time.

After watering in the sweet peas, I strolled over the to the greenhouse to soak all my flower seedlings. The asparagus is really starting to take off in the bed next to the greenhouse, and inside the greenhouse it is an all out flower and veggie seedling festival!

I'm going to have soooo many strawflowers this year!

After I came out of the greenhouse, a hint of purple caught my eye. The grape hyacinths are in full bloom right now!

They are so delicate and a blast of colorful cheer in the midst of all the emergent shades of green.

But there was a new arrival in the bulb garden!

A hyacinth of a different kind had also bloomed, one that I did not plant. My friend who's a plant extraordinaire says that a bird friend probably dropped it into my flower bed, and as purple is my favorite color, well, I'm not sad about the surprise!

After huffing the hyacinths, I wandered over to the barn and tended to the ducks and chickens. The ducks especially are laying like champions, and I have to say they were in a super amiable mood this moring. Which honestly is a change from their often abrasive lecturing. I swear ducks have a ton of complaints and see me as the manager.

But they must have known it was my birthday the day before or something, because other than a couple contented quacks, they were quiet this morning, as was I as I took in the rising sun over the blissful green scene that is my farm.

I love spring.

What a lovely and appropriate birthday present!

In your last photo, that cat looks as if it's up to no good. Hopefully it wasn't stalking the bluebirds.

That's exactly what she was doing, but thankfully can't get to them in their birdhouses. Since she keeps the voles and vermin under control I can't get too mad at her, but let's just say some chastisement happened. (She didn't look too chastised lol).

Cool! A new peony! And having a hyacinth just appear! Here they just disappear... Looks nice with most of the cones gone.

One thing about the cones, they just keep on showing up in the yard lol! It does look perfectly pretty for about two minutes though...

It's absolutely pouring outside, makes me wonder what other flowers and plants are going to appear when it warms back up!
