Time for More Multi-Language Interfaces on Hive?

Devs are not going to like what I ask there in the title. Because if you don't plan the application to be multi-language and support multiple character sets to begin with, there's more work afterward to adapt an existing app to add support for them.

Then, there's ongoing work to support multiple languages (keep translations in sync), and in some cases, there is a matter of reserving the right amount of space to accommodate translation in all languages, while not being too much space reserved in other translations. Probably the best way is to not reserve space at all, and have elements flow in a natural order, one after another. But that works if the UI was created this way, not if it has fixed positions and sizes.

Anyway, this is getting too technical for no reason, since devs already know what that would mean, most likely. And regular readers probably don't care much about these details.

Currently, on Hive I know Splinterlands has multi-language and multi-alphabet support. And even in Splinterlands' case, anyone using a non-English option would see the site was created for English speakers and then partially updated for other languages.

After checking, I saw Ecency also has multi-language support and it's very encouraging to see that. They also have quite a few languages supported (13 if I counted right), and others that aren't listed but for whom I see there are translators listed that contribute.

Back on the other chain, there was another application that started with multi-language support from the beginning. Quite a popular app, I used it too for a while: Busy app. It doesn't exist anymore and it was closed down before the split.

Why do I bring up the multi-language support now?

Because Hive began to stir encouraging levels of interest in the Spanish-speaking world.

Of the Spanish-speaking Hivers, I don't know how many are English speakers (some say they don't speak English and pretty much all of them use automated translators, which is not an indication of them speaking or not English). But for those who don't speak English I imagine using an interface in English is not their preference, but they have no choice.

Hive is already pretty difficult without having to learn the steps in a foreign language or using a translator at every step you make.

Maybe a poll among the Spanish-speaking community would be useful to see how many of them don't speak English.

There was an important development made these days to ease the transfer of HIVE and HBD at physical stores using the new Keychain Store mobile apps. But the apps are in English (edit: or Spanish for devices set up with Spanish language, stoodkev made clarifications in a comment), and the major utilization perspectives so far are in Latin America. Multi-language support to add Spanish would most likely be very helpful to grow the use of Keychain Store and transactions with HIVE and HBD in Latin America. I'm tagging @stoodkev here, as the Keychain Store (and the Keychain extension) probably would be easier to use in Latin America if they had a Spanish version too.

What do you think? Would you use an interface in your native language, if it's other than English?

Personally, I wouldn't. Because I always felt translations in my own language sound awkward. But I have the advantage of knowing English. I bet I'd think differently if I didn't know English.

However, many write content in Spanish as well as in English, and many use translators.

Yes, they do, but if they use translators and they don't understand English that is an additional operation some may not want to do. Why do you think all Web2 social media are translated into all languages on Earth?

I know english so I never thought about the issue. However, I do think it's an issue and if we want Hive to thrive in countries that don't speak English as their main language, then we need to do something about it.

We often don't think about an issue until we are faced with it. I am probably more aware of it due to my early years of programming background.

What do you think? Would you use an interface in your native language, if it's other than English?

yes, I want to see it in my language Urdu.

That will really be a great ideal to have multi language interface on hive

There are two multi-language dapps on Hive, as far as I know and mentioned in the post. But we could use more such support.

Good suggestion to open up Hive to more people whom do not speak english

Yeah, I think so. The only issue is how much time it takes to implement for each interface and if it is considered a priority compared to other developments.

This is important because when people around the world start using it, it will be much easier to use it if they have their own language community here.

Well, English is the widest spoken international language, but still there are plenty of people out there who don't speak it. So it makes sense to add additional options where there is demand.

English is my second language, so I'm ok with the way things are. I don't think a Filipino interface is necessary, since most Filipinos can understand English just fine. I also think it's more of a nice to have than a need. I want the devs to focus more on more important things.

That makes sense if you speak English. Not if you don't... I don't need translation in my own language either.

Actually it's supposed to be in English and Spanish already.

EDIT : It does show in Spanish if the device is set up in Spanish.
EDIT2 : Only EN/ES so far because that's where the current use cases are. Happy to add more languages in the future, if we have some Hive Stores opening in other countries.

Great to hear! Same for the Hive Keychain extension/app, or not yet? Thanks for your comment! I was just looking at the shared screenshots and didn't see the option to change the language, but your way of managing this is better, based on the language on the device.

We have a few languages on keychain extension although there might be incomplete translations since we added features. Not yet on mobile. When we're done integrating the new designs we'll make sure to update the translations before releasing the updates :)

Fantastic! It's what I wanted to hear. The important thing is the process was started and that the extension has multi-language support.

I speak English and so do not have the problem of translation but there are those who do not speak English and so rely most one translation. I think hive should be expanded to accommodate them too. Great suggestion you've got

It's mainly a reminder because I'm sure it's on their to-do lists. But as our ecosystem changes and new people join (perhaps enough non-English speakers), the priority for multi-language support should rise especially where it's not implemented at all so far.

It's a nice reminder too as we all strive to introduce hive to a greater part of the people, non-English speakers inclusive.

Greetings,
It can be difficult to play the game in my native language "French" while I am learning from tutorials on 3speak where everything is explained in English.
It is always a good start with other languages but ultimately English will remain the key element for a rapid progression in Splinterlands.
Thank you
Peace

while I am learning from tutorials on 3speak where everything is explained in English.

A strong community speaking a different language than English would take care of that and probably tutorials in native languages will start to show up. What we see at the Spanish content is that it's either bilingual or Spanish only. That builds strong ties in that community, I imagine.

You are right, community efforts to support players in their native language have been greatly spotted in various social media sources.
Thank you
