Splinterlands: Tax Those Keep Owners! :(

Since the trick the Splinterlands team pulled on us with Land 1.5 on the Mavs server last weekend, I started to check the land discord channel quite often... just in case.

To my surprise, new last minute changes are introduced to the game, the kind many investors (Keep owners) would dislike and few, but rich, investors (Castle owners) would like.

What will be the changes that seem to have upset Keep owners:

Basically, Keep owners are taxed multiple times:

  • the burned SPS, based on what the owner cannot capture from the maximum potential taxes (I believe there is a minimum SPS burn of 2% or maybe 3% but in most cases it will be higher)
  • 10% of the Keep tax claims go to Castle owner, same as any other plot for their own production (newly added)
  • Keep owners forced to contribute to upgrade the Castle, to lower their own taxes in Land 2.0

As a Keep owner, I am not happy. I am not outraged either. I understand the critiques being brought in discord that SPS-relevant changes should be done through SPS proposals, but I think it only applies to products already launched (I may be wrong). And Land gameplay is so late already...

Something else came up:

This further stirred the discussion that if rewards aren't harvested on working plots at least once every 7 days, taxes are lost for what is overflowing (there are no "back taxes"). Harvesting is done through the active key, so this is unlikely to be automated by a public service (and be ok from the security standpoint).

Inactive players/investors could negatively influence the income of the Keep and Region owners and they could affect everyone in the respective tract or region by not contributing to the upgrade of the Keep and Castle, when that will be a thing in Land 2.0.

Thinking of this reason ahead of time, like a true visionary that I am (lol), I made sure I had a full tract and haven't sold any plots from that tract. At least this way I control how active all plots are and the production on every plot. I may not be able to put (good) workers to my lower value plots at first, but at least I know I'll slowly activate them. Otherwise I may have risked having inactive owners in my tract, which is something nobody wants.

Maybe there will be a solution in these cases later on. But it almost certainly won't be any until Land 2.0, and that's many months away.

There's enough time, don't worry. I imagine active landholders will jump right in after the gameplay is launched, but another way to do it is to wait and see for a while then take a decision.

Land serfing will be a wild card toward getting higher utilization of land plots. I know a couple that will leave most plots empty and slowly clear them over time.

I believe that's why they want to push Land surfing as close to Land 1.5 as possible. They know the numbers too, and the utilization percentage, at least at first, will be quite low. I won't have more than a quarter of my plots running with an optimized PP. The biggest bottleneck for me is the DEC staking requirements. I could find some cards to fill in the plots if I had enough DEC.

I understand my 5 plots will be basically with Silver Deck level cards. Plenty of DEC currently but that next shiny thing(plot) that catches my eye will drive me short of DEC again.

DEC is the biggest bottleneck for me and few others I know. At least all of this demand for DEC may push it towards the soft peg of $0.001

Yes, I believe people won't rush into the card market (unless there are great offers they don't want to miss out on) if they don't have enough DEC, so this is the first bottleneck for land.

Sounds like quite a bit of drama, I wonder how things will go and I am not in the land game. It looks like it will probably continue that way as they make more changes to land.

Not sure if it's a drama already. I saw a couple of people expressing their discontent and their arguments, but there were far more heated moments I guess in Splinterlands history.

Owners are taxed in the game? They pay taxes in the game? Yuck! @gadrian this sounds awful. 😂 😂 Barb ✨✨ !BBH !CTP #ctp

It's a system of taxes in-game. Much like in reality. And like in reality, taxes suck!

Yes it does sound like reality which is terrible. The poorer people pay most of the taxes and the rich pay nothing. 🌟😢😊🌟 Have a great week ahead @gadrian !BBH !CTP

It is true that people have been waiting for such a long time and they are delaying it. Thats not good for game Future.

Yeah, the more they postpone, the more players lose confidence. I am not one of them, but I still don't like some directions things are going sometimes. This isn't necessarily one of the most representative ones.
