Being Consistent in Short-Form versus Long-Form Content

avatar
(Edited)

I'm not one to downplay the significance of short-form content in today's world. For all that matters, younger generations may almost exclusively use short-form content, which would make me a dinosaur for not using it as much. And we know what happened with dinosaurs.

From the perspective of someone not posting much short-form content, it seems to me that both writing and consuming this kind of content is more facile, but it comes at a cost: it's also more addictive.

On such platforms (Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Threads, perhaps Liketu), one or a few interactions a day is a drop in a bucket. You really need to be active and engaging throughout the day to stand out on people's feeds.

There are people who enjoy doing that. I'd say who are born for that, in some cases. For me, it would be a huge drain of energy.

Realizing that I can't keep up, I decided to only interact on Threads when I have something to say or ask. Sure, people who are on Threads and don't know me from elsewhere won't be impressed. I wouldn't be impressed either if I were an avid user of Threads and someone dropped a thread or a comment every once in a while.

Talking about every once in a while... that makes sense for blogging or podcasting or vlogging too. No matter how good you are, creating content every once in a while doesn't create expectations for the audience to see new content, and at some point will cause them to move on.

This is where I learned from short-form content and how things seem to work there.

On one end, publish posts often, in my case daily. With fresh content every day, the audience doesn't get bored and has always something new to read.

Engaging with people who comment is something very important, obviously. It's true that I don't receive hundreds of comments like others do, or this would become quite time-consuming.

On the other end, I rarely write posts above 1000 words, trying to keep them up to a few minutes of read time. Most people seem to prefer shorter posts and to the point.

One of the past days I celebrated one year of uninterrupted daily posting on Hive.

This is what HiveSQL says:

Last missed posting day: 367 days ago, on May 5th, 2022.

368 if we count today.

It wasn't easy. I posted:

  • when I was sick (including these days)
  • when nodes or interfaces acted up
  • on holidays
  • when I took a few days off

This was one of my goals, to reach at least 1 year of uninterrupted posting. Not part of my Hive goals this year, but I wanted to reach it nonetheless.

We'll see where the journey goes from here.

Wow! I’m impressed. For someone who takes a lot of breaks, I find this really inspiring. I think I’ll give posting every day a try and see how that goes.

Thanks! At first, it might not be very easy to get into the rhythm and find topics to write about every day. But in time, it becomes a habit.

Wow! 367 days of continuous posting is huge! I know that I was doing some crazy number a year two ago, but I doubt I did that long... Congratulations!

Also, nice take on short and long content... I'm a dinosaur, but I do invest in youngsters and their "interests"... I suppose, it will help me to survive and not extinct like dinosaurs... 😃

Thanks, man! I can't even be very happy about achieving it because I stay in bed most of the time.

That's a good way to live on as a dinosaur, hopefully. :)

We have the attention span of less than a gold fish, 7 seconds if I recall.

Anything beyond 7 seconds is too long. 😂

I wonder if this is a myth with the purpose of creating a trend toward short-form content. If that's what it was, it worked like a charm.

That's a pretty great consistency streak for posting. I have been able to be consistent in posting my weekly updates. I do my best during the rest of the week to show up and comment on posts and to reply to comments that people make on my posts. I don't let very many days go by without being here on Hive. I prioritize being active on Hive over other social media.

At the end of the day, this is what matters the most. They are all important whether they are posts, comments, or replies.

Right! Because they are all engagements or creations of one kind or another.
Have a great Friday and the rest of the weekend, @gadrian!

Way to keep up the good work! I'm working towards the daily goal as well. I've run into problems with Leo Alpha though, it doesn't bring up my photos like Beta! I'll figure it out eventually, I'm using Peakd until then!

You write quite regularly. The change shouldn't be massive for you.

I've run into problems with Leo Alpha though, it doesn't bring up my photos like Beta!

Do you mean you don't like the way they are displayed in the new UI or you can't find your photos like you did in Beta or there are errors uploading them? I haven't experienced any issues with photos yet, but maybe I haven't come to that edge case or I haven't paid attention.

Not really uploading, it's only after I publish it doesn't show the pictures unless you are viewing in Leo. So from Peakd you don't see the pictures unless you open the post and click on a link to show the picture in a separate window.

I believe that posting should be deliberate and functional. If I don't have a post to make, that day will be skipped. It doesn't bother me so much that I would make a post I didn't feel was adequate, just to fill a quota of a post a day.

That makes sense. And I did it like that for some time. I believe both approaches have merit and regular posting often depends on how willing you are to make it a part of your routine and, sometimes, make sacrifices for that.

Way to go! Very nice perseverance on your posting. It is by far no easy task to do this.

Thanks! The worse is when time is ticking and apparently, you can't put two words together or decide on something to write about.

That is very impressive stuff to write a post every day.
Consistency is a big part of growing on hive and your doing it the right way.

It wasn't easy. I posted:

when I was sick (including these days)
when nodes or interfaces acted up
on holidays
when I took a few days off

Not many people can keep up with that rate of effort.

I know your not big into the short form and in fairness it's a lot more productive to write full posts in my opinion but there is a good contest running at the moment.

If you haven't joined the leo contest yet will you do me a favor and complete one quest from it.

Link is here to the contest.

https://zealy.io/c/leofinance-4960/invite/XxQFkNkJggs7CX5ba4SKt

A quest will only take two minutes and help me out. The "say GM frens" quest on is literally just a comment on the new leo site. Instructions on the site. Thanks.

It's very addictive when you put a leaderboard and a prize in front of people. I get very competitive.

Thanks, mate! I think you are also doing a great job of posting regularly and also insightful content most of the time.

I joined zealy on the previous campaign. I tried to do it on this one too. Not to win, but to increase the numbers because I knew there would be others more motivated to do better with the campaign. But I didn't like that I had to install Telegram to become eligible.

I didn't install telegram for it
I don't touch it as an app.

I try to stay active as mic as possible but life gets in the way sometimes. Especially between playing splinterlands, working with Leo and real life on top of it.

I don't think that I can win but I'm enjoying giving it a good go. 😁

Strange, at some point, it seemed to be a precondition. Maybe Eric changed it.

How much work do you put into the Daily Leo?

That bit doesn't take too long but I'm helping with the zealy campaign, other tasks and working with Eric and others to grow the site.

Takes a bit of time every week.
