60 Positions Higher in 6 Months. It Rhymes too...

avatar

I don't know if you are familiar with the @liotes project or with their Wednesday challenges. Regarding the latter, challenges are often questions asked every week on Wednesday to which you can choose to answer or not. For that, you receive points to the Liotes ranking and usually upvotes at least from one of the project owners (usually from both). And a reply!

Some 6 months ago, the challenge was to post our Hivebuzz ranking based on HP, expecting to have a follow-up to see how this evolved over time.

This is a very good exercise many people should do, challenge or not, goals or not. Big changes are not visible from one day to the next, even from one week to the next, but after 6 months, enough time has passed to either notice progress or regress.

Yesterday, we were "challenged" to check again... So... let's do that.

I will check the rank by HP of my staking account, and then where would my rank be considering the total HP (not very relevant).

@gadrian-sp is ranked 437th by HP with 35,590 HP.

But if we add up the HP from my posting account (1,578), with 37,167 HP the rank would be 417th.

Of course, we can't calculate the ranks by adding the HP up because then the ranks of others would not be the same when they add up their accounts.

At the previous challenge, 6 months ago, this was my answer:

So, with my staking account, I advanced from 497 to 437. That's 60 positions higher, which is okay, although it would have been better to get into the Top 400.

A few things we need to take into consideration when we check this kind of ranking:

  • one position doesn't mean one person, but one account; it is likely whales have multiple accounts high in the ranking by HP
  • we compare individual with business accounts too (for example, Splinterlands, Leofinance, 3Speak, PeakD, Ecency, Liketu, etc.)

Anyway, I wanted to mark this moment in time with a post, as a future reference. I don't check my HP ranking very often, but I saw other people look at this as a point of reference, and it may be a way to gauge your own performance by comparison with others who are close by in ranking. Over time I learned that while sometimes is a good motivator to compare with others, you have the best results when you are focused on improving yourself.

It was a great challenge from the Liotes team. It is good to track our progress after some time. Well done on your progress! The top 400 isnt far away from you!

Yes, I loved this challenge, especially because it involved two steps and the second one was a good reminder to check on the progress.

The top 400 isnt far away from you!

I don't know, I don't think I'll get any closer until we get closer to the bear market again...

We'll know it for sure when it comes. 2025 might be the peak. But if the bull market is in a real hurry, it may finish by the end of 2024. Or it can extend into 2026.

You’ve really made a lot of progress from the last time. It’s a good way to track our progress to be able to know where we stand and where we plan to go. Soon enough you’ll be in the top 400. I’ll check mine now

Yes, that was a good two-step challenge that helped track our progress. I don't know what others will do during the bull market, but I don't intend to grow my HP further until the bear market, so top 400 has to wait.

Thanks for the shoutout for @liotes! We are doing our best to motivate people to engage in those Liotes missions and according to a number of comments, it looks like Hivians like them!!!

It's very hard to go up in rankings when you are in the Top 500... The competition is hard and everyone there works on powering up their HIVE... So, your result is very, very good!

Following our results is a great motivator and it was awesome to see that 99% of people gained positions in rankings for the last 6 months!

Top 400-500 is still breathable. Top 300 and then Top 200 are where things are really heated up. :)

I loved to see that too! Seems like we are a small community that keeps thriving and working toward something better. And HP is the focus of most of us.

Every person wants to see their progress and hard work, this Nan is a good challenge and also tells us how we can easily see our progress.

Nice progress. I got a decent increase in my ranking as well but you are so far ahead of me in the rankings. Those 60+ spots are quite a bit but it makes sense with your 1k HP HPUDs.

Yes, reading through the comments on the Liotes' mission post, I remembered the time when I jumped hundreds or thousands of positions in various rankings from one month to the next (I checked them closer in the early days).

Congrats on staying active! It's very important early on when you can grow quicker in percentages terms.

Yes, those helped, but I see a period of stagnation or even going back for me in the rankings, until the next bear market.

I really like to make posts documenting my present situation and then come back much later to see how I evolved. For me it's a motivation booster. With the Liotes Mission we have a good tool to do such things and I have the feeling people really get positive energy from seeing their progress :-)

Yes, I love creating such benchmark posts too, although in most cases my Hive goals posts serve this role. But you don't post about your goals as often (once a month?).

With the Liotes Mission we have a good tool to do such things and I have the feeling people really get positive energy from seeing their progress :-)

Absolutely! It is indeed a great tool for that. It encourages engagement too, and people will obviously feel fantastic to see their progress, especially if they don't check it often.

Yes I do them on a monthly basis only :-)

It is awesome that you managed to improve your rating, and by that much as well. Those with more tend to have an advantage since they get more with their curation. So your continuous powerups really shows its result. I am curious on the need for multiple accounts though. Wouldn't using one account earn more overall?

Not anymore. Now curation rewards are now linear, meaning they are directly proportional to the stake. In the past, there was an advantage to having centralized HP to boost curation rewards. But now, if you have two accounts of 10k HP voting on the same post and another one with 20k HP, all voting under 24 hours, the two 10k accounts will have together the same curation rewards as the bigger account.

One reason to keep them in separate accounts is security. Another is privacy. Another is having different accounts for different use cases. In fact, I will activate a new staking account for myself next year. I don't need to be an orca with one account. I'd rather be a whale with all my accounts someday, lol.

Oh, I thought voting with a bigger amount means you get a bigger piece of the rewards. The other reasons are pretty valid as well. Thanks for sharing this knowledge. Today I learned.

I am beginning to wonder where I will actually be ranked if you are ranked around 437th

You are in a position to jump many positions very quickly because if you look, above you there are a few people with only 1 HP more then with 2 HP more, and so on.

The higher you get in the rankings the harder it gets to move up. But from your position, you can advance so quickly.
