Are you Against or Pro Tipping?

I was out for a coffee today with a couple of friends and we had a long discussion about tipping. Basically, we have a friend who 9.9 out of 10 times never gives a tip and the rest of us do that almost everytime we tip but under specific terms. Before i dive deeper into this let me tell you a couple of things about tipping that some of you may not be familiar with.

You i have traveled a lot in our countries and basically have seen let's say every form of tipping or at least that's what i think so. We have for example some European countries including Greece where i live where tipping is not mandatory and you can do as you like. In some shops, restaurants or cafeterias you may find a tip box where you can put there everything you want as you may see fit.

In other countries like America for example, tipping mostly everywhere isn't only something that people expect but it's in a way mandatory. You will see in your receipts an added price of 10%+ or they will directly ask you what percentage of your total bill will be the tip. 10% nowadays is considered quite a low tipping with 20% or 25% being the "must" let's say.

On the other hand in many Asian countries like Japan or China not only tipping isn't mandatory but if you actually tip them, mostly likely they will give the money back to use as it can be considered quite rude. As you can see different rules apply in different countries.

Now if you ask me and this is my personal opinion i really like the logic we have here in Greece as well as in some other European countries. Tipping is something someone should do if he/she really wants to and it's based on other factors as well. For example, one factor is the actual service. It isn't always good and thus i am not obligated to tip a rude guy or girl just because.

At the same time, there are chances and trust me as the world is now it's something that really is part of our everyday lives. People nowadays face a lot of financial issues and to go out for a coffee or to a restaurant is a way out of these issues. That doesn't mean they have to pay extra just because they decided to go out, this in a way is like a form of punishment for these kinds of people.

In my opinion, we get to listen again and again let's take for example waiters earn close to nothing and that's why tipping should be a mandatory thing. This isn't something that the average Joe should think, the business owner should simply pay them a decent amount of money. I don't what's happening in your country but in mine and i know this firsthand, a waiter can earn the same or double the money from a person who even has a master's degree, so the low-income salary doesn't apply anymore.

At the same time, if i want to let's say reward a person for their service, attitude, or way of working i should be able to do so, giving anything that i want and can afford to. Now there is the view that my other friend has which is that he mostly never tips just because he doesn't want to and he prefers to save his money to buy an extra cup of coffee for example.

I honestly, respect that and nobody should blame him for anything. It's his money and he can use it however he wants to. I remember for example when i was in New York and i was in a restaurant eating and had some other tourists sitting next to me. The guys ate, paid and left. I then heard the conversation between the 2 waitresses while cleaning the table, basically saying how awful and stingy the tourist couple was because they left a tip of 10%.

When i heard that i honestly wanted to simply pay and leave nothing at all or the bare minimum that i could. The waitress responsible for my table was the exact opposite though, a young girl who knew ofc that we were tourists and when we tipped her, she gave the money back and told us that we shouldn't tip her as we are tourists and it's not a must. I don't know if she meant that of it was a trick or something but we told her to keep the tip. So please share your opinion and point of view.

I am surprised to ever hear that tipping can ever be made composary. In my country only few people still have the heart to tip. Things are very hard now, only those who have more than enough should tip, it is never supposed to be forced on anybody.

I live in Japan where tipping is not a thing. I'm from America where it is basically mandatory when you go out to eat, and is something you are strongly pressured to do everywhere else, even in places where there isn't even any service taking place.

I hate the US system. I know US business basically try to treat employees like slaves and pay them so little that they can't survive without tips. I feel sorry for these people of course, but I still think it is wrong to require tips. Give me good service and I'll tip, but tell me I'm required to tip and I won't want to tip and will probably never come to that business again.

I like how in Japan it's not required and the business actually pay waiters enough money, but sometimes I do get such amazing service that I want to tip. Therefore I like the system you have in Greece. It shouldn't ever be required, but if I want to, I should be allowed to tip to reward exceptional service.

I'm no close to the US but too inmerge in their social media while practicing the language. I see so many posts about this.

They say they will have to increase the prices, which then do it, I mean, make the prices real, to cover all the business expenses and salaries for the employees, because you are already increasing the prices by making tipping compulsory, and then it is not fair to be either distributing the tips one gets because of their great service with those that do the bare minimum, or having excellent servers at mercy of the client's heart. So many stories of servers giving 110% to an asshole that then leave like 1$ tip.

I've never understood that.

And then servers say "don't go out if you can't afford to tip" why? I can pay for the meal but don't have another 10 - 20% to spare. Let me ask for my food directly to the kitchen then.

totally agree and also the argument of don't go out if you can't afford to tip is so lame. Instead of focusing on doing something that would increase they basic income in terms of their employers they try to ask that amount from the average joe. I have seen videos of people that get a tip which is like a 10% and they start curcing, throw the food etc etc. Unbelievable
