Darning a Sock

avatar
(Edited)

Hand knit socks are worth fixing when a hole develops. Here are my steps to repair a hole on the sole. I begin with matching sock yarn and a tapestry needle to outline the hole with running stitches while the hole is held open on a wooden darning disk.

Next I lay down the long warp threads over which I will weave a patch.

After doing the horizontal weaving, I did some diagonals for reinforcement. Finally, I wove the yarn ends into the sock.

Finished:

It is important to do this as flat as possible, with no knots or bumps.

What wonderful photos these are, dearest @fiberfrau !! I use a similar technique for repairing holes, though not as neat as you! I love the idea of being more focussed on a hole repair; making a particular shape, even in a contrasting thread... Gorgeous post - thank you for sharing it! 😘

Wow, @fiberfrau. Nicely done! Is darning a sock or clothing with thin material like cotton or denim similar? Barb :) !BBH !CTP

Yes, I use leftover yarn from making the socks. I do want to try some decorative darning on jeans with embroidery floss or sashiko thread. !PIZZA
