The Narrow Escape

After we finished learning about our civil rights in class, the four of us—Daniel, Johnson, Victor, and I—believed we knew all about how the law of our country works and when to stand up for ourselves. We all had different characters that bonded us as friends. Johnson was more reasoned, and he thinks twice before taking any action. He is more melancholic by nature. I, on the other hand, just flowed with anything that was going on around us, while Victor and Daniel were choleric in nature.

After leaving the class, we headed to the cafeteria for some drinks. "We have so many rights, and yet the police constantly abuse them," Daniel initiated the conversation. "Indeed, I will never permit any officer to disrespect me or infringe upon my rights," Victor concurred. They both carried on with their discussion while Johnson and I quietly sipped our soft drinks.

As soon as Johnson finished, he proposed to drive us home, an offer we eagerly accepted to avoid the chaos of public transportation. We climbed into Johnson's car, and he navigated us past the school gates. With the music on, we began our journey towards Victor's place.

A few kilometers from the school, we encountered policemen at the T-Junction inspecting some vehicles. As we approached, one officer halted us. "Hello, young men, where are you coming from and where are you heading?" he inquired. "We're just coming from school and heading home, sir," Johnson replied. Daniel, who was never fond of policemen, frowned at the officer. "May I see your car documents?" the officer requested. "Sir, I don't believe you have the right to ask for that," Victor retorted, giving Daniel the morale to speak up. "Exactly, Why do you need our car documents when we've already told you we're students? You should just check our student IDs and let us go," Daniel protested.

"Guys, calm down now, Johnson if you..." Before I could finish my statement, Johnson had already brought out the car document and handed it over to the police. Sorry about that, sir, he said. The policeman gave us a disgusted look before he took the document. Come down from the car; this time the policeman said it with a harsh tone. We all wanted to come down from the car, but he requested that only Johnson come down from the car.

"I want to see the number on the engine of the car if it matches what is on the document," the policeman said. This time, Daniel came down from the car and asked the policeman, "Are you a mechanic? Why are you looking for the number on the engine?" Daniel said. Victor and I got down from the car, and then Victor said, "Sir, we don't have money to give you, and we know our rights."

"Guys, please get back inside the car. You are only adding fuel to the fire." Johnson said. "I am not adding anything; I am just stating the facts." Daniel said. "Hello sir, here are our students ID cards, and we are all studying law (which was a lie). We have to get home on time so we can meet our parents. Stopping us was fire, and I am sure you don't want to add fuel to the fire," I told the policeman in the coolest way I could.

"Well, make sure you focus on your studies and stay away from drugs," the policeman said to us. He gave us our documents, and we were on our way. It was a narrow escape for us to be harassed.

You guys have mind o, from just one lecture you are already challenging an officer like this.
Luckily, he didn't disturb you guys much, some of them can be a pain in the ass with their overzealousness.

Thinking about it now and other experiences people had, I was glad we didn’t meet the bad ones on the road that day cause we might have been taken to their holding cell

The young students are eager to learn and want to practice what they have learned, but they seem to cross a fine line that can leave them in a bad situation. It's good that they were able to stop the pace of that conversation and stop adding fuel to the fire.

A situation that almost got out of control and could have led to something more serious. It is true that we have rights that support us, but in practice all these rights are of little use in the face of the wrong people.

Thanks for sharing.
Good Friday.
