Roland Garros - June 2

Yesterday was a good day at the French Open, or should I say it wasn't full of bad events. There were two matches that were absolutely worth watching.

Enzo Couacaud vs Pablo Carreño Busta

One of which was the Enzo Couacaud vs Pablo Carreño Busta. The fight between these two was something to remember. Pablo Carreño Busta is a remarkable player, I've been following his career for some time now. I always had the feeling that he's reached a certain level and he's stuck there. He has difficulties breaking through.

Yesterday he had the misfortune to meet a French player who obviously was enjoying the support of the spectators as he was playing at home. Enzo Couacaud was able to win the first set, but then his luck changed or should I say ran out. Busta was able to control the next three sets even though he had very little or no support at all. He always has a lot of self control that helps him go forward. Well done Pable, see you in the next round.

Mackenzie McDonald vs Cristian Garín

The next match that I not just loved but was excited about from the beginning to the end was between Mackenzie McDonald and the Chilean Cristian Garín. Garín has proven himself to be a robust player, who can overcome any situation, except for one, when he had a total blockage in the final against the Italian Berettini. This doesn't make him less valuable in my eyes. He was playing the final after a series of tough matches and maybe it was too much for him, physically and mentally as he's still young.

Yesterday he met the American Mackenzie McDonald, who was as good as Garín. The best matches are those in which the players are at the same level and the result is decided in the last moment. This was a match like that. It was extremely interesting and exciting till the last minute.

If you look at the technical analysis, it looks like they both did the same thing, with small exceptions.

The match lasted four hours and it was an absolute beauty from every point of view. At 9 pm, local time the spectators were asked to leave the arena as there's a curfew in place in Paris, but they didn't want to leave. The match was stopped till they leave and then resumed but it took some time till security could empty the arena. So the spectators exited and then stopped behind the fence and watched the game hanging on the fences, rooting for Garín. That tells something.

This happened in the last set, actually at the end of the last set and I was afraid this forced stop could throw off the players and can have an effect on the outcome. At the end Garín was able to secure his place in the next round and I'm really glad for that. He deserved the victory. The only problem now is if he can recover properly or not. The match took 4 hours! 4 hours! Can you believe it? 4 hours of fight. I know this is not the longest match as we've had 6 hour matches in the past, but even so, it must have been exhausting.

Tomorrow he's going to meet the American Marcos Giron, so judging from his rank, it's not going to be hard to defeat, but in this business you never know.

Daniil Medvedev had no difficulty winning against the American Tommy Paul to qualify to the next round.

Stefanos Tsitsipas needed only three sets to win against the Spanish Pedro Martínez.

Eurosport was working against me again as I wasn't able to watch the Filip Krajinović vs John Isner match. This is the second match with Isner I could not watch, but he did well without me :P The next match will be different and I'm 100% sure it's going to be broadcasted as he's going to play against the Greek God called Stefanos Tsitsipas. This match will be epic. Tsitsipas has the chance to win, but it will not be easy, that's for sure.

The Hungarian Márton Fucsovics met the Italian Fabio Fognini to his misfortune, but then again, it looks like Fucsovics, no matter who's he playing against, can hardly get past the first two round, unfortunately. Fognini may be older, towards the end of his career but he's still better than the Hungarian, so Fucsovics had no chance. The first set was exciting and ended in tie-break but the next two were not something to write home about.

Today looks interesting as well as the two most valuable players are playing, but more about that tomorrow.
