a walk on svenner

(Edited)

this summer i took a boat trip out to Svenner, the island with the iconic red lighthouse about 5 km offshore from where we live in southern norway. the lighthouse is great but there is much more to the island.

naturally i head straight to the path that climbs up to the lighthouse

it's not far but it is high enough to give a commanding view even at the base of the tower. this photo is edited with a carmine filter

i stayed a while enjoying the scene and exploring all possible angles

then descended back toward the docks. the houses were originally the lighthouse keepers' residences and such but now are rustic but popular tourist accommodations

many of the rocks are amazingly rounded and smoothed by ancient glaciers and the elements

white houses were residences

and red houses were service buildings

a bridge crosses a tiny inlet and the path follows the narrow harbor

but instead i scaled the rocks heading to some tidal pools and the open sea.

Larus marinus, the great black-backed gull is the largest of our gulls. a thriving colony resides here but on the mainland we usually only see them for a day or two after a storm

back on the trail along the harbor

there is a shallow beach here at the end of the harbor, mostly sand but also rather muddy. there is a much better beach farther along

what a place to have a cottage. behind those rocks is the open sea.

but i'm going to the beach

it's early so the only folks here are the ones who have spent the night, either in their boat or in some of the housing

i had a nice lunch and was relaxing when black clouds suddenly appeared. i wasn't prepared for rain so i made my way back toward the harbor thinking i'd better find some shelter

fortunately the clouds vanished even faster than they appeared so by the time i got to the harbor the skies were blue again. some adventurous sailors were tacking their way out to sea.

the harbor is very narrow so they had to come about a number of times.

i had plenty of time so i climbed back up to the light until my ride came

what a day. i took these photos either with my samsung s22 or my lumix fz300. what i didn't tell you was the part where my lumix fell into the water...

THE END of my camera
