a peek down under

this is my contribution to FungiFriday by ewkaw

fungi are masters at presenting their best sides to the world with their cleverly crafted colorful caps. they delight our eyes and perhaps even our taste buds. but today i am 'lifting some skirts' and getting a good close look down under.

every one is different but their beauty declines with age

i took all these photos this year with my samsung s22. some are edited on the phone.

What kind is the second photo? I can recognize all the rest but I've never seen the second one.

it is Cortinarius camphoratus. i checked for english names Goat cheese webcap or webcap camphor, Rotting potatoes... it is common enough here but not in large numbers. as the names suggest the smell is useful in identifying. but also the cortina or veil. the fibrils on the stem (and cap) are clearly visible if you zoom in on the photo.

if you are out looking for edible ones, this is one of those types that are easy to pass by without thinking about it

Thanks for the ID I'll be checking if it grows in my area, it looks pretty cool. Looks like there is a version of it here called Cortinarius iodes with a purple cap with spots on it. I've only seen it once way up north.

my photo with the bent stem is not exactly typical

Yeah that made it look really exotic compared to the more normal occurrences of them.
