this set of maritime images was taken in my home town of Stavern at different times of the year.

these first two are from the evening sun shining on the island in may with two couples on a mainland dock, trying their luck at fishing.

again looking out toward the island, a sole boat enjoying an early june afternoon before the summer crowds

the historic gunpowder house on the island is an ideal place for a summer arrangement. this shot is taken from a high spot on the mainland, about 1 km from the gunpowder house

a couple of shots of the lighthouse on the island one august evening

an October blue hour shot of the outermost of the erect wooden boats in the old naval base. the boat is part of an art exhibition that has been there about 20 years but more recently somebody decided to add their input, let's call it erudite graffiti. Terje Vigen is one of the Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen's most noted poems.

The story and setting is from the area around Grimstad under the Napoleonic Wars in the years 1807-1814. England started a blockade of Norway's southern coast because Denmark and Norway had agreed with Napoleon’s France and Russia to close its ports against English commerce.
The poem Terje Vigen describes the dramatic saga of the pilot
Terje who tried to run through the English blockade. In a small
rowboat he made a desperate attempt to smuggle food, especially
grain, from Denmark back to his starving family. He was captured and
put to prison in England. After the Napoleonic Wars were over in 1814
he was released and found that his family had died of hunger. Some
years later as a pilot at the coast outside Grimstad, he rescued an
English Lord and his wife and little daughter. It turned out that the
Lord was the commander of the ship that had captured him, and Terje
now was in as position to revenge his own wife and little daughter...

the outer harbor in December fog. the ramp to this floating dock is removed during winter because the dock often becomes extremely slippery and dangerous.

i took all these shots with my Lumix FX300 except for the rowboat which i took with my samsung S22 phone
