I didn't read the novel but I watched the movie, I would say background,past and upbringing has a great influence on us as adults, some people are products of their bad past experience, I think Christian didn't get destroyed totally because he still had people who loved him, the power of love. The movie was crazy to me at first, I watched it in 400L and that was the first time I was seeing women being abused doing s*x though I have heard of it but watching it have me a clearer view and an understanding of how to avoid men with such traits
