Hi guys and girls of this community, lovers of riding on 2 wheels. A few days ago, I finished with one of the improvements I wanted to make to my bike, because apart from the fact that it rattled sometimes, something inside me wanted to change it for something new, and forget about one of the fundamental parts of the bike until further notice.

What I changed was the central axle (I'm not sure if that's what it's called, the part where the pedals go). I must begin by saying that a job that for me was going to take a couple of hours, ended up taking a little more than a week. Both because it got complicated, and because I got busy with other things. Enough of this beating around the bush, let's get to the story.

image.pngimage.png

Everyone who knows how to do bicycle maintenance will think "Eliud, why an axle is going to give you problems, if you just remove the screw or nut that holds the pedals and ready, remove the thread that holds them and little else", well that's the theory. The practice is different, especially when only basic maintenance had been done to the bicycle. The pedals or well the bar that holds the pedals (I do not know what is its name) was very stuck, years of dirt, grease and pedaling.

I did not imagine that this was going to be so (hahaha), the support where the crown is not, came out something "fast" I had to use some fire to heat a little and it came out without much effort, this on the first day of repair. When I went for the other one, well... it did not come out with that method of a little hot and ready, with this one I lasted the rest of the days (about 5). Each one I went and hit it in different ways and forms that I could think of, I must admit that I even thought of using an emery to cut that part (I was a little tired).

One afternoon, already in my last idea (before throwing the bike from a sixth floor, where I live hahaha), I decided to put it on a stove burner, to a more direct fire, so it gets hotter (before I was using a candle, hahahaha). I did this process 2 times, I was a little afraid of burning myself, because the truth is, if it was hot (hahahaha), before the second time, I added vegetable oil, so that it would go into the joint and come out.

image.pngimage.pngimage.png

This was the solution, a few more strokes and the last bracket came out, but ... the bike retaliated and when the crown came out it hurt my leg, I did not know whether to cry from pain or happiness (hahahahahaha). Now that this was out, I had to put the new centering axle, which now were going to be bearings, I cleaned the area very well, because these do not carry grease as the old ones.

Once everything was clean it was time to assemble and test. I confess that there is a huge difference, the bike feels lighter when pedaling. I didn't think the change was going to be so big. For me the wound and the 5 days of beating I gave it to get the bracket out, were worth it for the final result. Step by step, my bike is taking on a different face and that excites me.

Well, guys, so much for my tragic story, which ended with a happy ending, thank you very much for reading and see you next time.

PD: have your bikes maintained so you don't suffer the same way I did hahahahahahaha

image.pngimage.pngimage.png

image.pngimage.pngimage.png

This is one aspect of cycling I don’t miss. Replacing the fly wheel (that’s what I’ve always seen it called here) can be a major hassle, especially on custom import frames from the late 80s. I used to find them for cheap around here but many Japanese and French brands had proprietary parts that took a bit of searching and haggling to find, making them expensive to fix

Since I have had the bike for about 1 year, I have entered a world quite unknown, which I found interesting. Repairing it and not sending it to the workshop, has made me appreciate its evolution, making it fun. For now I have not had any problems in getting spare parts, because although it is a bit outdated, even here in my country and in general, they have not changed much and that is an advantage for now.

A big hug and thanks for stopping by
