Rant: The Complete and Utter Stupidity of Telemarketers and Autodialers!

Well. My first time posting to the Rant, Complain, Talk Community because... it just seemed like the most fitting place to put this.

Besides, the community is overseen by folks I know and respect, so there's that...

Onwards!

Effing Telemarketers!

At the best of times I don't have too much patience with telemarketers. Maybe it's because I was in sales for a number of years, and every time I hear somebody make their pitch it's so painfully obvious that they are reading from a script.

For føck's sake, have an original thought of your own!

I suppose there isn't really much of an alternative since most telemarketing essentially consists of the sale of products that probably shouldn't have been made in the first place, being sold to people who can't afford them, by people who have no business being in the selling business in the first place.

A bit harsh?

Maybe, maybe not.

0848-Leaf.jpg

Maybe part of my intolerance stems from the fact that I hear somebody start talking and it takes me approximately 2.8 seconds to determine that they are selling something that amounts to very little more than a thinly disguised scam.

Well, maybe not ”scam” exactly... but I find the whole ”you like saving money don't you?” approach kind of mindnumbing as a precursor to asking me to spend $99.95 in order to ”save” money. From where I'm sitting, I haven't ”saved” a God Damn thing, I have spent $99.95. What's more, while I'm being expected to spend $99.95 in in order to save money — which only happens after spending more money (that I'm supposedly “saving”) on something that it would most likely never occur to me to buy in the first place!

And no, it does not inspire me that part of the proceeds from my purchase will be donated to a fund set up to help a starving armless and legless boy who lives in far away Baklaliviatatlaglooshen because he needs some money to buy a goat!

(Bonus points to anyone who "gets" that deeply obtuse reference...)

A cold day in hell...

But I'm sort of digressing here but I guess that's OK because this is the ”Rant and Complain” community!

The main thing that got me to even sit down and start grinding this post out is the mindnumbing stupidity of telemarketers with auto dialers. I'm sure a lot of you — although this may be limited to people who live in the US — get so called "robocalls" where you don't even get to talk to a person, because you're being called by a robot.

In the most insidious version of these you're called by a robot, which then senses that you picked up the phone and said ”hello” — and is then designed to immediately call back to the actual person who's doing the telemarketing sales pitch. It's a way to call 30 people at a time, but only talking to those where the phone is actually answered.

Theoretically...

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!

First of all, how many people are just going to sit there waiting on a call that originates from a fake caller ID, while a mechanized voice says "Please don't hang up! You're important to us! One moment while I connect you????"

But today this brand of stupidity reached a new high.

Incoming robo call, in this case our answering machine picked up and started playing its message, the autodialer sensed a response, did its thing to called back the actual telemarketing person, and guess what?

Beep beep beep! The number you have dialed is disconnected or no longer in service. Beep beep beep!

Sit on THIS and spin, dumbbell!

Seriously????

Are you so føcking lame and retarded that you can't even set up your equipment to call the right number???" May your armpits be invaded by the fleas of a thousand camels!

I just needed to get that off my chest. I hate the phone anyway and pretty much never answer it, and with good reason it seems!

Thanks for reading and have a great rest of your day!

Great rant and I love the ironic? #ctp tag . I have a feeling there may be some of their crew looking a little guilty!
Best wishes :-)

Very annoying! We have a 'don't call me' kinda list you can sign up for, so telemarketers know not to call you. It works quite well, because I can't remember the last time I got such an annoying call.
I did get the robo call though, but it was from a collection agency that apparently wanted to claim money for some energy company from some idiot who put in my number instead of their own. They called quite a lot, even after leaving them a message online, so I had to call them to take my number off their list. I hate calls.

Yeah I've heard of people who sign up to the do not call list but I think that's more of an invitation to get calls. Could just be me being pessimistic lol.

Haha, yeah I understand. So far, it has worked out pretty well for me here in the Netherlands. I'm not sure about the quality in other lands though.

Perfect place for a rant such as this! I find it incredibly annoying to receive the calls, particularly since we don’t have a plugged in house phone, though we do have a number. Good luck to them calling us! When they get my cell phone though, I get pissed. Thankfully not many do but I did pick up the phone the other day since I was expecting a call from a company and it wasn’t them, it was the robot that sensed me pick up and transfer it to someone to talk to me. I couldn’t imagine the level of ineptitude that listed the wrong number hahaha. Really good stuff there. Soon they will blame it on the Russians!! They hacked our systems of robot calling software and altered all of the numbers!

Yeah but how else would I have known that the US Marshalls have a warrant for my arrest?!?

Yeah the easiest answer is to let all calls go to voice mail. I do precisely that unless I recognize the caller. Except for my last call that was from my area code and I was expecting a call from my mechanic that isnt in my contacts... So I answered and now I am aware of the warrant LOL

I pick it up and don't speak. The computer doesn't speak either, so, I hang up. I have put my number on a no-call list for robocalls. It is actually working pretty well.

Yes, I really dislike robocalls. Ugh!
