Life's Challenges: Sticking WITH Your Plan in Both Good and BAD Times!

Confession time: I have always been a rather dedicated planner, but perhaps not as good at executing my plans as sticking to them!

Perhaps part of the blame for that divergence can be left at the feet of the reality that many endeavors I have undertaken have been far less successful than I had hoped for.

Or have they, really?

Experience has taught me — often the hard way — that the most challenging situations we face are often when we are in a state of disappointment and ready to throw in the proverbial towel.

I guess it's largely just human nature: It's easy enough to stay dedicated and enthusiastic when things are going well, but a lot harder to do so when things are going discouragingly badly. And especially if the bad times just seem to drag on and on and on.

Many moons ago — when I was a business consultant — I realized that many projectes fail not so much because they are "bad" projects or they are "managed poorly," but because their principals decide to quit too soon.

As Long As There Is Life, There Is HOPE!

Confession time, part II: Most of my successes have not been the result of brilliance or good fortune... but the result of the fact that I am quite simply a stubborn bugger who doesn't really know how to say when "it's enough."

Here in the social-cryptosphere, we invariably seem to "lose" a good number of active participants when we experience times where the markets seem to be "going sideways" for what seems like an eternity.

I watch the activity in my Following feed gradually slow... and I realize that people aren't necessarily "failing", they are simply growing tired of what feels like a very long road to "going nowhere."

A Matter of Patience?

Which often leaves us facing the question how just how much patience we have.

I'm usually an exceptionally patient person, when it comes to most things I get involved with, particularly if I am not dependent on them. For example, I like the rewards we get on Hive, but I am not dependent on them for my income.

My patience only tends to become truly tested when we reach that point where "going sideways" looks more like "an inevitable and slow fall off a cliff." I don't want to fall off a cliff!

Most of my time horizons are quite long, and they always have been.

For example, when we started our garden here, I estimated that it would be ten years before we got things to place where our home grown food was somewhat reliable. We started in 2011... and we're just about there!

Similarly, when I was left with powering down my Hive account back in March... also also set a "1000-day goal" to bring it back to where it had been, at its high point. I have generally had extremely bad luck with trying to "hurry" anything. So I don't.

I always figure that if my plans are sound and realistic, I just need to stick to them and see them through. I'm currently 37 days into my "1000-day plan," and it'll be interesting to see where it lands.

I suppose some might argue that when we make really long term plans we start depending too much on "crystal balls" rather than staying in the present and dealing with what is immediately at hand.

Personally speaking, what I like the most about long term planning is that it tends to "smooth out the bumps in the road." Perhaps that's a boring approach... but I'm really OK with that!

Check back with me in 963 days!
