A visit to an expensive doctor and an window to a different world

There is kind of a saying that goes something like ... your life (imagination of life can be) is limited by your poverty.

And another: you are the average of your 10 close friends.

Both of these give the idea that we are limited by our environment. The more we are surrounded by successful and wealthy people, the bigger the likelihood we become like them.

This is a story of my recent visit to a private specialist doctor for surgery. A very expensive one.

I shall cut to the chase.

I was shocked when I saw the bill. Not that I am going to foot it, since my insurance will cover for it. But the sheer size of it.

To simplify the story, let's just say that I was shocked to discover that the doctor's surgery fees itself was about USD 5000 for a 2-hour operation.

I went back for a post op review today and what prompted me to write this post was the price charged for putting two bandages and cleaning the wound in less than 30 seconds!

The fee for changing the dressing, charged on top of the consultation fee, was approximately USD 90.

This really blew my mind.

When I was more settled, I began to wonder what the hell was happening, and the main lesson here?

Clearly, this episode allowed me to peek into a window to a different world.

I don't know how many of you reading this belongs to the high net worth type. But I can imagine life and world to be very different for these folks who earns way too plenty.

*They won't care about the upvotes, if they are on Hive, for example. *

Their life probably have a different set of leisure and freedom that we don't know of.

You get the drift.

I meant to say that they would think differently, and likely have different attributes.

But everything is relative.

I once travelled to a third world country. While in a taxi, I casually asked the driver if he had eaten in the most famous fast food chain in his country, which we just passed.

He told me that is an impossible place for him to eat at. Way too expensive for him to imagine.

You can probably imagine, at that moment, I am that wealthy man in his eyes since I could afford to eat in that fast food chain if I so wishes.

Everything remains to be relative

If my surgeon compares with how much the successful entrepreneurs of the world makes, he would probably feel small. The Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos of the world would have a different lifestyle that could be send my rich surgeon puzzling about the boundaries of wealth and luxury too.

The most important takeaway

It's getting too long, this one.

I will just end with Never say never because you don't want to restrict your imagination and possibilities. And when we get there, Be a good human.

I am likely the average of all rich and poor men on Earth, and I am enough.

wealth is really relative, when i started making money was when i realised this. health is an expensive gift that we sometimes forget we have. $5K is really a lot, and $90 to dress a wound is a lot too

Heya mate.. a really cool post. Speaking relatively, I'm kinda like that guy living in a developing nation, struggling to make it through each month. I won't give up though, and keep trying to put one foot in front of the other. I choose to seek out kind inspirational people so that I may push on ahead forward, and try to emulate some of their success(es). Relatively speaking, you are one such individual to me. Would love to be part of your alliance and grow in strength along with you too over time.

As much as you have on Facebook, here in Pakistan there is a full month's salary and within this amount of money, people have to spend their whole month, pay house rent, do all the things.

It's kind of crazy how expensive medical fees can be. I heard quite a few people that I know that they went across the border to a different country to get medical operations. It's all relative but I have a feeling that the fees are way too large if your insurance doesn't cover things.
