What Bugs You?

A Trip To The Market . . .

Yesterday I attended another funeral, and had errands to take care of. While we were out, we stopped by one of the local village markets.

These are everywhere. Some are open daily, others once a week. But they all offer a wide variety of things from food to clothing.

This one even had live Issan music to entertain the people as they shopped.

They were quite good!

Bugs Abound . . . . . .

This isn't the same as shopping at Lotus's (local big box store). Here you find an abundance of the foods that have been an Issan staple for generations.

And yes, bugs of all kinds!

There was crickets, both whole and made into flour. Beetles of at least 3 types. Grasshoppers and these . . .

Those are mostly ants and their eggs, prepared in more ways than I thought possible!

OK, Why All The Bugs . . .

Many ancient cultures left references to the health/healing prowess of nature's small, but powerful, creations. It was common for people around the world to supplement their diets with . . . Bugs!

And while that practice has been lost in many places, some still do. Asia is one of them.

I doubt that people hundreds of years ago understood the protein and amino acids makeup as we do today. They probably thought it tasted good, and they felt better.

Crickets, for example, have more protein per gram than goat, chicken, or pork. And they contain all 9 amino acids we need for our bodies in a natural form when used as a supplement to our diet.

So today, in Thailand (and most of Asia), you can find them at markets, food carts, and roadside stands.

They are making it to other cultures again as well.

What Else Was There . . .

You could find fish, chicken and pork. Fresh seafood like crab, shrimp, and these guys . . .

So fresh they were still moving! 😆

There was fried chicken (the spicy wings were very good!), Thai sandwiches, more donuts than you could dunk, and other tasty sweet treats.

In addition you could find inexpensive clothing, shoes, and beauty products.

We bought limes, watermelon, tomatoes, onions, and an assortment of 'green stuff' that I have no clue to their name in English. Only that it was tasty for dinner!

If you are in Thailand, find the markets! Just walking around is a treat.

A Quick Update . . .

Remember my last post about the termites?

This was my afternoon snack . . .

Deep fried with extra chilli and rice!

I have to say it might not top my list of bugs to eat, but it wasn't bad! 😆

Best Regards

Richard Taylor

That's an interesting market, but I'm afraid, apart from the fruits, the rest is not really for me 😃

Something for everyone!

The amount of different fruit available here is really good! Some I have never seen, or tried before.

Somethings, like watermelon, are slightly different than what I get in America. Not as sweet maybe? And a smaller variety.

But overall, more than enough really good ones!

Thanks for reading, and the comment! I do appreciate it!

I bet I would find a bunch of fruits (maybe veggies too), that I had no idea exists :)

Thanks for the nice reply and have a nice day.

Wow bro. I could eat from everything there except the bugs part. No bugs plz. I have also heard on why at least crickets are no good for human consumption. Now, I am no doctor scientist it came from an article I read a while back about crickets and human consumption. Crickets create this chemical called Acheta. I don't see any red lines under that word so I am going to assume I spelled it right. Its that chemical that is no good for us. But, I respect anyone that has made up their minds to eating bugs, I just hope they have the same respect for me when I say no thanks to any kind of bug. I even read articles about the elites of the world who are greedy and trying to save all the good foods for themselves and just give us the craps left over. But I live for myself, and family. So no way bugs will be a meal in my house, I won't allow for it. My older son GF is a vegetarian or vegan or who TF know, and when she comes to my house if its steaks we eating your going to watch us eat steaks, and yes my wife will make her something to suite her to eat. I remember the jaw dropping she did when she saw me eat my first tomahawk steak. She wanted to say something but couldn't because my house, my rules, your lucky my wife made you something. I don;lt hate the girl, but i know she hates me when she see that rare steak juice drip down my jaws. LOL. How do you think it makes me feel when she eats that toefue? Makes me want to puke a steak for her. Honestly, I don't care what ppl are, just let me be and we won't have problems.

I was raised on farms and ranches. We ate steak several times a week since the freezer was always full.

Today, I would rather eat about anything OTHER than steak! 😆 Seafood come to mind.

But each to their own. I will grill steaks for people at our BBQ's. But I often make tofu/veggie kabobs as well! I usually eat a burger or something.

That's the beauty of this world, a diverse diet that everyone can enjoy!

Ya bro diversity is what we all need. We shouldn't care what other ppl eat. Just care about what you want to eat.

While I have never been a fan of eating the bugs available at markets I have tried most of them. I had to draw the line at centipedes though, that's just too gross for me. The few times I have tried larva they made it so spicy that it could have been dirt for all I knew and it was pounded down to a paste to the point where it didn't resemble anything at all.

That's a true market you've visited there. The ones I go to have thousands of people at them so it is kind of difficult to really enjoy yourself but I guess that is what I get for living in such a populated area!

I think we caught this one at off-peak. Several vendors were just opening. But it was a nice size crowd to walk around in.

Hello!

They deep fry them in spicy oil, so crunchy? 😆

Not on my top 10 list of bugs to eat, but I would try it again.

Thanks for reading, and the comment! I appreciate it very much!
