Why we need Rejuvenation of Rivers now

In Bangalore, a lot of households get Kaveri water, it is one of the main sources of water in Bangalore but still, we have a lot of water crisis out here. Because the Kaveri water supply is limited and you get the water every 3-4 days. Most of the household relies on Water Tanks or borewell water.

If we talk about Indian rivers, they are actually the root of Indian Civilization where a large portion of land used to get its water from Indus, Saraswati, Krishna, Godavari, and Cauvery. These rivers ave nurtured the entire country for a long time like years but in the last decade or something, the rivers are getting polluted. Pollution like dirty sewage water, throwing of wastes in the water, removing soil from the river bed so on and so forth.

Rivers are like the arteries and veins of the human body which provide water to all the countrymen and thus similarly if the blood gets polluted our whole body malfunction similarly when the water gets contaminated it harms us in any way. Along with pollution one other problem is that most of the river is getting dried up and thus we have only 22% of clean water remaining and if we don't act now it will be reduced to 7% in the coming years.

As I said about Cauvery water, it has a stretch of 430 km but you know its water does not touch the sea often and it only mixes with seawater in the rainy season.

But why are we talking this we cannot change the Climate conditions right? Yes, correct but we can certainly do something to save rivers. One such way is to plant trees on the riversides. Trees don't need rivers but rivers do need trees to survive.

One such movement was Rally for Rivers which was started sometime in 2017 but I don't know the current status.

According to Rally for rivers:

Rally for Rivers is a movement to save India’s lifelines. Sadhguru launched Rally for Rivers on September 3, 2017, to revitalize India’s rapidly depleting rivers, and personally drove over 9300 km through 16 states to raise awareness about the dire situation.

Drawing thousands of people at over 180 public events, the Rally became the largest public-endorsed, mass awareness campaign in history. Supported by over 162 million people, Rally for Rivers is the world’s largest ecological movement today.

Rally for Rivers provides a comprehensive solution to save India’s rivers and is unique in its structure as a primarily economic program with a significant ecological impact.

The “Revitalization of Rivers in India” Draft Policy Recommendation was handed over by Sadhguru to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after the culmination of the launch campaign on October 2, 2017.

Rally for Rivers is now focusing on the rapid implementation of the solution through detailed studies and on-the-ground action in several states.

In simple terms, the policy which was drafted is to increase the amount of water in rivers through tree plantation for a minimum of 1 km width on either side of rivers. This is the easiest and successful way to rejuvenate the rivers.
