An inspirational film masterfully performed by Cuba Gooding Jr. that is based on a true story. Life of a King as it is originally known takes us to the streets of Washington to show us part of the life of Eugene Brown, an ex-convict who once released from prison does everything he can to reform his life and regain what he had lost ( sons).

People who go to prison can have second chances, that is a reality that this film teaches us, many times we tend to make judgments against these people but there are truly circumstances that led many to walk the path of criminality, although I am not trying to exempt the guilt of those who are there, I just want to join the message that this film wants to convey.

When it was produced, a good part of the critics gave it an accolade while others not so much, because in a country where racism has its history, the division between blacks and whites was still felt at that time. However, what Eugene Brown did after his release from prison was an inspiration for many recovery programs to become more deeply involved in the reformation of these people.

Una película inspiradora y magistralmente interpretada por Cuba Gooding Jr. que está basada en una historia real. Life of a King como es originalmente conocida nos traslada a las calles de Washington para mostrarnos parte de la vida de Eugene Brown, un ex convicto que una vez sale de prisión hace todo lo posible por reformar su vida y recuperar lo que había perdido (hijos).

Las personas que van a prisión pueden tener segundas oportunidades, esa es una realidad que esta película nos enseña, muchas veces solemos emitir juicios contra estas personas pero verdaderamente hay circunstancias que llevaron a muchos a transitar la senda de la criminalidad, si bien no estoy tratando de eximir la culpa de quienes están allí solo quiero unirme al mensaje que este film nos quiere transmitir.

Cuando fue producida buena parte de la crítica le dio un espaldarazo mientras que otra no tanto, pues en un país donde el racismo tiene su historia la división entre blancos y negros aún se sentía en aquel entonces. Sin embargo lo que hizo Eugene Brown luego de salir de la cárcel fue de inspiración para que muchos programas de recuperación se involucraran de una forma más profunda con la reforma de estas personas.

Clearly we are shown how growing up without parents can harm society, this is one of the most outstanding parts of the story, Eugene grew up without the guidance of his parents and ended up in prison for 17 years, there he met Searcy, a convict with a life sentence who taught him to play chess as a way of life, or rather, taught him to live through the chessboard. He was practically the father and guide he never had on the street, and when he got out he tried to live honestly in spite of the harsh policies for ex-convicts, reinsertion into society is never easy for this type of person.

By providential circumstances Eugene happened to take care of young rebels in a classroom and from there his life got an unexpected purpose: "to take care of those who in childhood were like him", without wanting it and without looking for it Eugene could transfer the lessons he learned in prison to those young people who needed it so much, and fortunately changed not only the lives but the fate of many young people who would have ended up dead or in prison as happened to him.

Think before you act, that is the slogan of the chess club that Eugene formed, today better known as Big Chair, the movement that touches many in North America and helps people to reform their lives. In the plot we see the problems that arise as well as the decisions of life, although it is generally a drama it is a very raw film that shows the reality.

Claramente se nos muestra como el crecer sin padres puede hacer daño a la sociedad, esta es una de las partes más resaltantes de la historia, Eugene creció sin la guía de sus padres y acabo preso por 17 años, allí conoció a Searcy, un convicto con cadena perpetua que lo enseño a jugar ajedrez como una forma de vivir, o mejor dicho, le enseño a vivir a través del tablero de ajedrez. Fue prácticamente el padre y la guía que nunca tuvo en la calle, y cuando salió intento vivir honradamente a pesar de las duras políticas para ex convictos, la reinserción a la sociedad nunca es fácil para este tipo de personas.

Por circunstancias providenciales Eugene paso a cuidar a jóvenes rebeldes en un salón de clases y a partir de allí su vida consiguió un propósito inesperado: "cuidar a aquellos que en la infancia fueron como él", sin quererlo y sin buscarlo Eugene pudo trasladar las enseñanzas que aprendió en la cárcel a aquellos jóvenes que tanto la necesitaban, y afortunadamente cambio no solo la vida sino el destino de muchos jóvenes que habrían acabado muertos o en las cárceles como le sucedió a él.

Piensa antes de actuar, ese es el Slogan del club de ajedrez que Eugene formo, hoy día mejor conocido como Big Chair, el movimiento que conmueve a muchos en Norte América y que ayuda a personas a reformar sus vidas. En la trama vemos los problemas que se presentan así como también las decisiones de la vida, aunque es generalmente un drama es una película bastante cruda que muestra la realidad.

I am a lover of films based on true stories, they are usually quite emotional because they connect with the sensitivity of the viewers, they help us to think and reflect on realities because in one way or another we are not exempt, we are involved and if we are parents much more, because we have to assume the responsibility of raising that we have with our children.

In the plot we can see how young people can be rescued through a game, I like the theme of seeing the king piece in chess as our life and the board representing the whole environment where we live, there any decision can affect both positively and negatively, it is certainly a good message that leads us to think before acting, the message was very clear and staged by each of the actors who were part of the cast.

Finally and to conclude, it is a movie that I highly recommend, it is not boring at any time, it is a drama as I mentioned before but its message is strong and powerful, it has the ability to hook even if you are not a lover of movies based on true stories. I am one of those who think that this type of film should be a must see because they serve to reflect and think, two things that are very absent in the fast paced and changing world we live in today.

Soy amante de los films basados en historias reales, suelen ser bastante emocionales porque conectan con la sensibilidad de los espectadores, nos ayudan a pensar y a reflexionar sobre realidades pues de una u otra manera no estamos exentos, nos vemos involucrados y si somos padres mucho más, pues tenemos que asumir la responsabilidad de criar que tenemos con nuestros hijos.

En la trama podemos ver como los jóvenes pueden ser rescatados a través de un juego, me gusta el tema de ver a la pieza de rey en el ajedrez como nuestra vida y el tablero representando todo el entorno donde vivimos, allí cualquier decisión puede afectar tanto positiva como negativamente, es sin duda un buen mensaje que nos lleva a pensar antes de actuar, el mensaje fue bien claro y escenificado por cada uno de los actores que formo parte en el elenco.

Por último y para concluir, es una película que recomiendo ampliamente, no es aburrida en ningún momento, es un drama como mencione anteriormente pero su mensaje es contundente y poderoso, tiene la capacidad de enganchar así no seas amante de las películas basadas en historias reales. Soy de los que pienso que este tipo de film deben ser de visualización obligada pues sirven para reflexionar y pensar, dos cosas que están muy ausentes en el mundo tan acelerado y cambiante que vivimos hoy.
