The Battle of the Mayors: Boris Johnson vs. Willy Brandt

In today's round of the Battle of London and Berlin, we take a look at the mayors who are at the helm of their respective cities - London and Berlin. This office is of great importance as it concerns the leadership and representation of the city in political and administrative matters. Moreover, it has been shown throughout history that the office of capital city mayor often prepares one for even higher political office. Therefore, we will also look at the two most prominent representatives in each case and include them in the contest. So let's take a closer look at the two cities and their famous mayors.

Importance of the office in the city:

In Berlin, the office of the mayor is at the center of the political action. The mayor of Berlin is also the head of government of the state of Berlin and has wide-ranging powers in the areas of administration, economy and culture.

In London, on the other hand, the mayor is responsible for the Greater London Authority, which oversees the administration of Greater London. Although the office of London mayor has grown in importance in recent years, it is still less powerful than that of Berlin mayor.

So Berlin takes the lead.

Name recognition nationally and internationally:

The Berlin mayor's name recognition is generally limited to Germany, as the office's jurisdiction is limited to the capital. Nevertheless, some Berlin mayors, such as Willy Brandt and Richard von Weizsäcker, have achieved international notoriety.

In contrast, London's mayor often has a greater presence on the world stage due to London's international importance. Prominent London mayors such as Boris Johnson are also internationally known and have played a larger role in national politics.

It is not at all easy for me to determine the winner here, as I find it difficult to assess the international prominence of Willy Brandt and Richard Weizsäcker. I assume, however, that Boris Johnson has achieved a higher degree of recognition - we will not judge the manner here. So the point goes to London.

Number of incumbents in the current position

The current position of Mayor of London was created in 2000 after the establishment of the Greater London Authority Act to strengthen local government in London and manage the city more efficiently. Since that time, 9 people have held the position.
The current position of Mayor of Berlin has existed since 1951 and 17 people have held the office so far. However, there is a peculiarity, namely that during the period of German division (1948-1091) also existed a mayor of East Berlin. This office had further 7 persons inne.

This point goes therefore somewhat clearly to Berlin.

The term of office of the Mayor of London is usually four years.
The Governing Mayor of Berlin has a term of five years.

At an average of €81,400 a year, the Berlin mayor's pay is significantly lower than that of his London counterpart, who earns £152,734, or €176,820 a year. So this point clearly goes to London.

London City Hall, the official residence of the Mayor of London, is a modern architectural masterpiece and reflects the contemporary character of London. The official residence of Berlin's mayor, the Red City Hall, is an impressive historical building and a symbol of the city.

In fact, the Red City Hall seems a bit old-fashioned to me, against the super chic and modern London City Hall. I therefore give this point to London, which can compensate with it - so it remains exciting.

Comparison of the two most famous mayors:

Boris Johnson, former mayor of London, is a colorful figure in British politics. He later became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and was instrumental in leading the Brexit campaign. His tenure as London mayor was marked by major infrastructure projects such as the Routemaster bus and the London Cycle Hire scheme.

Willy Brandt, former mayor of Berlin, was well known not only in Germany but also internationally. He played a crucial role in German and European politics and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for his efforts to promote détente during the Cold War.

It is difficult to compare these two so fundamentally different politicians. However, I believe that Willy Brand's historic achievement in reconciliation, for which he was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, can win the decisive point for Berlin.

Now that London and Berlin have played each other in 6 matches, it remains extremely exciting. In the overall standings, Berlin can catch up and bring about the equalizer. It's 3:3 in this fierce battle of the capitals!

In der heutigen Runde des "Battle of London and Berlin" werfen wir einen Blick auf die Bürgermeister, die das Ruder in ihren jeweiligen Städten - London und Berlin - führen. Dieses Amt ist von großer Bedeutung, da es die Führung und Repräsentation der Stadt in politischen und administrativen Angelegenheiten betrifft. Ausserdem hat sich im Laufe der Geschichte gezeigt, dass das Amt des Hauptstadtbürgermeisters oft auf noch höhere politische Ämter vorbereitet. Daher werden wir uns auch die beiden jeweils bekanntesten Vertreter ansehen und diese mit in den Wettstreit einbeziehen. Lasst uns also einen genaueren Blick auf die beiden Städte und ihre berühmten Bürgermeister werfen.

Bedeutung des Amtes in der Stadt:

In Berlin steht das Amt des Bürgermeisters im Zentrum des politischen Geschehens. Der Bürgermeister von Berlin ist gleichzeitig Regierungschef des Landes Berlin und hat weitreichende Befugnisse in den Bereichen Verwaltung, Wirtschaft und Kultur.

In London ist der Bürgermeister hingegen für die Greater London Authority zuständig, die die Verwaltung von Greater London überwacht. Obwohl das Amt des Londoner Bürgermeisters in den letzten Jahren an Bedeutung gewonnen hat, ist es immer noch weniger mächtig als das des Berliner Bürgermeisters.

Bekanntheitsgrad überregional und international:

Der Bekanntheitsgrad des Berliner Bürgermeisters ist in der Regel auf Deutschland beschränkt, da die Zuständigkeit des Amtes auf die Hauptstadt begrenzt ist. Dennoch haben einige Berliner Bürgermeister, wie beispielsweise Willy Brandt und Richard von Weizsäcker, internationale Bekanntheit erlangt.

Im Gegensatz dazu ist der Londoner Bürgermeister aufgrund der internationalen Bedeutung Londons oft auf der Weltbühne präsenter. Prominente Londoner Bürgermeister wie Boris Johnson sind auch international bekannt und haben in der nationalen Politik eine größere Rolle gespielt.

Ich nehme aber an, das Boris Johnson einen höheren Bekanntheitsgrad erreicht hat - über die Art und Weise soll hier nicht gerichtet werden. Der Punkt geht also an London.

Der Amtssitz des Berliner Bürgermeisters, das Rote Rathaus, ist ein beeindruckendes historisches Gebäude und ein Symbol für die Stadt.

Tatsächlich erscheint mir das Rote Rathaus etwas altbacken, gegen die super schicke und moderne London City Hall. Ich gebe diesen Punkt daher an London, das damit ausgleichen kann - es bleibt also spannend.

Vergleich der beiden bekanntesten Bürgermeister:

Boris Johnson, ehemaliger Bürgermeister von London, ist eine schillernde Figur der britischen Politik. Er wurde später Premierminister des Vereinigten Königreichs und führte maßgeblich die Brexit-Kampagne. Seine Amtszeit als Londoner Bürgermeister war geprägt von großen Infrastrukturprojekten wie der Routemaster-Bus und den Londoner Fahrradverleih.

Willy Brandt, ehemaliger Bürgermeister von Berlin, war nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch international bekannt. Er spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in der deutschen und europäischen Politik und erhielt 1971 den Friedensnobelpreis für seine Bemühungen um die Entspannungspolitik im Kalten Krieg.

Es ist schwer diese beiden so grund verschiedenen Politiker miteinander zu vergleichen. Ich glaube aber, dass die historische Leistung Willy Brands was die Versöhnungspolitik betrift, für welche er auch mit dem Friedensnobelpreic ausgezeichnet wurde, hier den entscheidenden Punkt für Berlin holen kann.

Nachdem London und Berlin sich inzwischen in 6 Spielen miteinander messen, bleibt es extrem spannend. In der Gesamtwertung kann Berlin aufholen und den Ausgleich herbeiführen. Es steht 3:3 in diesem erbitterten Kampf der Hauptstädte!
