The Battle of London and Berlin: Part V - The Tube vs. the Berlin Underground

In the continuation of the "Battle of London and Berlin", this time we take a closer look at local public transport in the two metropolises. In London, it's "The Tube," while Berlin proudly presents its "Berlin Underground."

Fame for transportation:

"The Tube" is world famous. The name alone conveys the image of London and the "Mind the Gap" is so legendary and so typical of London that it can even be found on T-shirts and mugs. The Berlin Underground may not be as iconic, but it's still an important part of urban life. Clear point for London, which thus takes the lead

Popularity and number of users:

London is quite a bit larger than Berlin, so "The Tube" tends to have more users. It is estimated that the London Underground carries one billion passengers a year. It's packed at rush hour, but also well-frequented.
Berlin's subway is equally popular, especially with commuters and tourists. In 2022, the U-Bahn carried around 490 million passengers, just over half of the "Tube."
This also means a clear victory for London, which continues to lead.

Number of subway lines:

London is also ahead in this category. With 11 subway lines, "The Tube" is a huge network and has 2 lines more than Berlin, which still has 9 lines.

Interestingly, Berlin wins here by a narrow margin. Berlin's subway stretches over about 146 kilometers, while "The Tube" can boast about 135 kilometers of subway track.
So Berlin finally scores a point and shortens the gap to:

Number of tube stations:

London's slightly shorter network obviously has significantly more stations. With 270 subway stations, London has a clear lead here over Berlin, which has "only" 173 stations. So another point for London.

Operating costs and prices for the passenger:

Berlin does better in this category. The Berlin Underground has both lower operating costs per kilometer than "The Tube" and ticket prices are also generally lower in Berlin than in London.

Punctuality:

Punctuality is an important factor in both cities. "The Tube" unfortunately has to deal with regular delays, while the Berlin Underground is often considered more reliable.

Comfort of the respective subways:

Both cities offer a high standard of comfort. The cars are clean and well-maintained, and most of the subways are air-conditioned. However, the Berlin subway has the advantage of being less crowded. Therefore, this point also goes to Berlin, which is catching up. Tie!

The age of the subways:

In the playoff for the final victory, the age of the subway systems will be compared between "The Tube" and the Berlin Underground.
London introduced its first subway line, the Metropolitan Line, in 1863. This was the beginning of "The Tube." This makes London's Underground probably the oldest subway system in the world.

Berlin's U-Bahn followed almost 40 years later, opening in 1902. Although not quite as old as "The Tube," the Berlin Underground still has a proud and historic history.

So in this category, "The Tube" wins and is able to win the game very narrowly:

"The Tube" ist weltberühmt. Allein der Name vermittelt das Bild von London und das "Mind the Gap" ist so legendär und so typisch für London, das es sogar auf T-Shirts und Tassen zu finden ist. Die Berliner U-Bahn mag nicht so ikonisch sein, aber sie ist trotzdem ein wichtiger Bestandteil des städtischen Lebens. Klarer Punkt für London, das damit in Führung geht
