The Duel of the Palates: Fish and Chips vs. Currywurst with Fries

Today's duel in Morticia's Battle of London and Berlin is a true classic - a culinary showdown between the two cities that puts the taste buds to a (tough) test. In the right corner, we have the British national dish, fish and chips, and in the left corner the Berlin answer, currywurst with fries. Let's compare these two fast food snacks widely available across their respective cities in different categories and see which dish emerges as the winner.

I have to say that this comparison didn't really come easy to me, as I'm personally not a fan of fast food and both the nutritional value, fat content and also the way these admittedly legion calorie bombs are "eaten". I'll do my best to approach the topic with professional objectivity, without adding too much personal judgment. So here goes...

Familiarity of the food:

Fish and chips are as British as Big Ben and are known worldwide for their unique flavor and traditional preparation. Everyone who comes to London wants to try this iconic dish at least once.
Currywurst has also found its permanent place in Berlin's food culture. This simple yet very popular dish is known far beyond the city limits and is appreciated by Berliners and tourists alike.

Also due to its colonial heritage, I think more people worldwide have heard of fish and chips than currywurst. The number of Indians alone could be enough to choose a clear victory for London in this category.

Popularity of the food (sales estimate):

It is estimated that over 250-350 million servings of fish and chips are sold in the UK each year. This clearly shows how popular this dish is.

In Berlin alone, there are about 1500 snack bars that sell an estimated 70 million curry sausages a year. Although this is also a gigantic number, the gap to fish and chips is clear. So once again, London is ahead and continues to lead the way.

Possible variety/variations of the dish:

Although the basic ingredients in fish and chips - fried fish and chips - are always the same, there are numerous variations, ranging from different sauces to side dishes such as mashed peas, salad, or cucumber. So here it can even come to adding something healthy.

The curry sausage actually leaves a little more room for creativity. Here, the type of sausage, the type and especially the spiciness of the sauce, and also the side dishes can vary. Therefore, this point goes to Berlin and to the currywurst.

Nutritional value and vitamin content - how healthy is the food?

Unfortunately, fish and chips is not exactly a healthy food. It is deep fried fish and chips, which cannot be considered healthy especially because of the high fat content and the lack of vitamins. However, the fish provides valuable proteins and also omega-3 fatty acids.

The curry sausage with fries is certainly not a light meal as well. Again, the sausage and fries are deep-fried, and the curry sauce can be quite spicy. Healthy is really different, but for many Berliners, the currywurst is a real soul comforter. Even if this psychological aspect cannot be completely disregarded, it is probably not enough for a victory in this category.

It should be emphasized that the competition in this category is on a very low level for both dishes. Nevertheless, the duel of the Underdogs is won by Fish and Chips and puts London further in the lead.

Ecological footprint of the meal:

The production of fish and chips has a relatively high ecological footprint due to the fishing and the energy required for frying.

Similar to fish and chips, the environmental footprint of currywurst with fries is significant. The production of the sausage and the frying of the fries cause emissions.

Here it is difficult for me to pick a winner and I have not found any reliable data. Therefore, there is no point for anyone.

Average price:

In London, fish and chips prices vary depending on the restaurant or takeaway. However, you can expect to pay around 4 to 7 pounds per serving.

In Berlin, currywurst is usually a bit more affordable. A portion costs about 3 to 5 euros, depending on the place. Thus, this category goes to Berlin which can shorten once again.

The duel of the plates goes narrowly to London. It's interesting that both cities are known for a fast food variant and I would hope for the future that healthier and perhaps more sustainable dishes can achieve the same cult status as is currently the case for fish and chips and currywurst.

Das Duell der Gaumenfreuden: Fish and Chips gegen Currywurst mit Pommes

Das heutige Duell in Morticias Battle of London and Berlin ist ein echter Klassiker – ein kulinarischer Showdown zwischen den beiden Städten, der die Geschmacksknospen auf eine (harte) Probe stellt. In der rechten Ecke haben wir das britische Nationalgericht, Fish and Chips, und in der linken Ecke die Berliner Antwort, die Currywurst mit Pommes. Lass uns diese beiden weit über die jeweiligen Städte verbreiteten Fast-Food-Snacks in verschiedenen Kategorien vergleichen und sehen, welches Gericht als Sieger hervorgeht.

Ich muss sagen, dass mir dieser Vergleich nicht wirklich leicht gefallen ist, da ich persönlich kein Fan von FastFood bin und sowohl den Nährwert, den Fettgehalt und auch die Art und Weise wie diese zugegebenermaßen legändären Kalorienbomben "vertilgt werden". Fish and Chips ist so britisch wie der Big Ben und ist weltweit für den einzigartigen Geschmack und die traditionelle Zubereitung bekannt. Jeder, der nach London kommt, möchte zumindest einmal dieses Kultgericht probieren.

Auch die Currywurst hat ihren festen Platz in der Berliner Esskultur gefunden. Dieses einfache und dennoch sehr beliebte Gericht ist weit über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus bekannt und wird von Berlinern und Touristen gleichermaßen geschätzt.

Auch durch das koloniale Erbe denke ich, dass mehr Menschen weltweite von Fish and Chips gehört haben, als von Currywurst. Allein die Anzahl der Inder könnte ausreichen, um einen klaren Sieg für London in dieser Kategorie zu gewähleisten.

Obwohl die Grundzutaten bei Fish and Chips – frittierter Fisch und Pommes – immer gleich sind, gibt es zahlreiche Variationen, die von verschiedenen Saucen bis hin zu Beilagen wie Erbsenbrei, Salat oder Gurke reichen. Hier kann es also sogar dazu kommen, dass etwas Gesundes dazu kommt.

Die Currywurst lässt tatsächlich etwas mehr Raum für Kreativität. Hier kann die Art der Wurst, die Art und besonders die Schärfe der Soße und auch die Beilagen variieren. Daher geht dieser Punkt nach Berlin und an die Currywurst.

Nährwert und Vitamingehalt – wie gesund ist das Essen?

Leider ist Fish and Chips nicht gerade ein gesundes Essen. Es handelt sich um frittierten Fisch und Pommes, was besonders aufgrund des hohen Fettgehalts und der fehlenden Vitamine nicht als gesundheitsfördernd angesehen werden kann. Allerdings liefert der Fisch wertvolle Proteine und auch Omega-3-Fettsäuren.

Die Currywurst mit Pommes ist sicherlich keine leichte Mahlzeit. Auch hier werden die Wurst und die Pommes frittiert, und die Currysauce kann ziemlich würzig sein. Gesund ist wirklich anders, aber für viele Berliner ist die Currywurst ein echter Seelentröster. Auch wenn dieser psychologische Aspekt nicht vollständig außer Acht gelassen werdn kann, reicht es wohl nicht für einen Sieg in dieser Kategorie.

Es ist zu betonen, dass sich der Wettstreit in dieser Kategorie für beide Gerichte auf einem sehr niedrigen Niveau abspielt. Trotzdem gewinnt das Duell der Kellerkinder Fish and Chips und bringt London weiter in Führung.

Ökologischer Fußabdruck der Mahlzeit:

Die Herstellung von Fish and Chips hat einen relativ hohen ökologischen Fußabdruck aufgrund des Fischfangs und der Energie, die für das Frittieren benötigt wird.

Ähnlich wie bei Fish and Chips ist der ökologische Fußabdruck der Currywurst mit Pommes erheblich. Die Herstellung der Wurst und das Frittieren der Pommes verursachen Emissionen.

Hier fällt es mir schwer einen Sieger zu kühren und ich habe leide auch keine belastbaren Daten gefunden. Daher gibt es für niemandne eine Punkt.

Durchschnittlicher Preis:

In London variieren die Preise für Fish and Chips je nach Restaurant oder Imbiss. Du kannst jedoch mit etwa 4 bis 7 Pfund pro Portion rechnen.

In Berlin ist die Currywurst in der Regel etwas erschwinglicher. Eine Portion kostet etwa 3 bis 5 Euro, abhängig vom Ort. Damit geht diese Kategorie an Berlin, dass noch einmal verkürzen kann.

Das Duell der Gaumenfreuden geht damit knapp an London. Es ist interessant das beide Städte für eine Fastfood Variante bekannt sind und ich würde mir für die Zukunft wünschen, dass gesündere und vielleicht auch nachhaltigere Speisen den gleichen Kultstatus erreichen können, wie es aktuell für Fish and Chips und die Currywurst der Fall ist.

Nachdem London und Berlin in inzwischen 4 Spielen gegeneindander angetreten sind, bleibt es sehr spannedn. In der Gesamtwertung kann London ausgleichen und es steht 2:2. Was für ein harter und ineressanter Kampf!
