Fireworks on the Rhine, Düsseldorf // Feuerwerk am Rhein, Düsseldorf
Summary:
Photographed Düsseldorf's New Year fireworks on the Rhine. Snapped all pics hand-held, even caught a neat light column effect on the tower. Spent more time soaking in the vibe than clicking away. The Rhine's high tide made for awesome reflections in the time-lapse.

Fireworks on the Rhine, with a view of the Düsseldorf TV tower - that or something similar would be the technical description of this scene. I took this photo on New Year's Eve, of course. But since I'm now 10 days overdue with this post, I don't want to refer to New Year's Eve - especially not in the title 😅 , but simply to the fireworks.
The view I was able to enjoy can be seen in picture B, it shows the "calm before the storm". Like every year, there are of course people who can't wait to set off fireworks before 0:00, but in this picture - a long exposure shot with my iPhone (without a tripod, but handheld) you can see almost no fireworks, which was important to me.
Picture A shows @annasdiary who I photographed during the fireworks with an instant camera. I wanted both the fireworks and the instant photo to be sharp. Didn't work out so well (with flash it looks even worse).
All the pictures, including those in the gallery above, were taken hand-held. Accordingly with a rather high ISO, but since the A7S II with 12MP has quite good values, it was exactly the right decision to take this camera with me. I sacrificed my tripod for the time-lapse shot with the Osmo Action (Picture C).
The GIF shows about 15 minutes of fireworks compressed into 10 seconds. The Rhine was at high tide that day, which was a lucky coincidence for me, as the fireworks were reflected much better in the water. If you look closely, you can see that a ship or party boat is passing by in the picture.
It may seem like I was just taking photos the whole time - but I wasn't. I positioned the Osmo Action right at the beginning and didn't take out my smartphone or camera for the first 5 minutes. It was important to me to just let everything sink in. The last few years I've either spent New Year's Eve at a party, taking photos (and never looking at the pictures again) or even streaming them live once. For this reason, a (second) tripod was out of the question for me this time - I could have had a much lower ISO and also nice long exposures that show a lot more fireworks, but I wanted to take a simpler approach this time. The shots in the gallery (see above) were all taken within 2 minutes. In row 2 of the gallery you can see how fast the light is and how the sensor exposes. I shot handheld with an exposure time of 1/100s. The camera exposes from left to right, and during this 1/100 second in which the sensor was exposed, it was so bright that it looks as if the tower is wrapped in a column of light. The first picture in row 2 is edited by me, the second is the original and has not been altered.
I think it's a really cool effect! If someone had done such "linear" editing in Lightroom, I would have thought: "How bad is this image edited?" - but knowing that the sensor was exposed like this and the light column is exactly in the middle of the tower makes it a wonderful coincidence for me. I am personally most pleased with this picture.

Ein Feuerwerk am Rhein, mit Blick auf den TV-Turm von Düsseldorf - so oder so ähnlich wäre die technische Beschreibung dieser Szenerie. Aufgenommen haben ich dies natürlich an Silvester. Da ich nun aber schon 10 Tage überfällig bin mit diesem Post, möchte ich nicht auf Silvester verweisen - besonders nicht im Titel 😅 , sondern einfach aufs Feuerwerk.
Den Ausblick den ich genießen konnte sieht man in Bild B, es zeigt die "Ruhe vor dem Sturm". Wie jedes Jahr gibt es natürlich Leute die es nicht abwarten können schon vor 0:00 Feuerwerk zu zünden, aber in dem Bild - eine Langzeitaufnahme mit meinem iPhone (ohne Stativ, sondern aus der Hand heraus) sieht man so gut wie kein Feuerwerk, dies war mir wichtig.
Bild A zeigt @annasdiary die ich während des Feuerwerks mit einer Sofortbildkamera fotografiert habe. Ich wollte sowohl das Feuerwerk, als auch das Sofortbild scharf haben. Hat nicht ganz so gut geklappt (mit Blitz sieht es noch schlimmer aus).
Alle Bilder, auch die der oberen Galerie sind frei aus der Hand geschossen worden. Dementsprechend mit einer recht hohen ISO, da die A7S II mit 12MP aber über recht gute Werte verfügt, war es genau die richtige Entscheidung diese Kamera mitzunehmen. Mein Stativ habe ich für die Zeitrafferaufnahme mit der Osmo Action geopfert (Bild C).
Das GIF zeigt ca. 15 Minuten Feuerwerk komprimiert auf 10 Sekunden. Der Rhein hatte Hochwasser an dem Tag, was für mich ein glücklicher Zufall war, da sich so das Feuerwerk wesentlich besser im Wasser gespiegelt hat. Wer genau hinschaut kann sehen, dass ein Schiff bzw. Partyboot im Bild vorbeifährt.
Es mag jetzt so wirken, als ob ich die Ganze Zeit nur fotografiert habe - hab ich aber tatsächlich nicht. Die Osmo Action habe ich direkt am Anfang positioniert und die ersten 5 Minuten habe ich kein Smartphone und kein Kamera rausgeholt. Mir war wichtig, einfach mal alles auf mich wirken zu lassen. Die letzten Jahre habe ich entweder Silvester auf einer Party verbacht, fotografiert (und mir die Bilder nie wieder angeschaut) oder sogar einmal Live gestreamt.
Aus diesem Grund kam für mich diesmal auch kein (zweites) Stativ in Frage - dadurch hätte ich eine wesentlich geringere ISO haben können und auch schöne Langzeitbelichtungen die, wesentlich mehr Feuerwerk zeigen, aber ich wollte es diesmal etwas simpler angehen. Die Aufnahmen aus der Gallery (siehe oben) sind alle binnen 2 Minuten gemacht worden. In Reihe 2 der Gallery kann man sehen wie schnell Licht ist und wie der Sensor belichtet.
Aus der Hand habe ich mit einer Belichtungszeit von 1/100s fotografiert. Die Kamera belichtet von links nach rechts, und während dieser 1/100 Sekunde in der der Sensor Belichtet worden ist, war es so hell, dass es aussieht als sei der Turm in eine Lichtsäule gehüllt. Das erste Bild aus Reihe 2 ist von mir editiert, dass zweite ist das original und nicht verändert worden.
Ich find das einen richtig coolen Effekt! Hätte einer in Lightroom so "linear" nachgearbeitet hätte ich gedacht: "Wie schlecht ist das Bild bitte bearbeitet?!" - aber zu Wissen, dass der Sensor so belichtet wurde, und die Lichtsäule genau mittig vom Turm ist, macht es für mich zu einem wunderschönen Zufall. Über dieses Bild freue ich mich persönlich am meisten.
