I'm not a person, I'm an immigrant

image.png

We decided to move to the UK in search of a better life but I swear, sometimes I feel like the country doesn't want me around. Every day, I go to work and be a productive part of society and all I get in return is antagonistic policies from the home office.

When you read and watch the way MPs and politicians talk about immigrants, you'll think we illegally came in on boats. I am not going to lie, it really grinds my gears.

There are politicians on TV talking in parliament about how immigrants are somehow a net negative to the country's economy. When you hear them talking, you'd reckon that we are refugees or something. I merited my access to the country and now they're making ridiculous and largely unattainable

The home office takes thousands of pounds from immigrants and as if that's not wild enough, we also have to pay tuition that most people in the country wouldn't be arsed about.

The whole situation has left a nasty taste in my mouth and generally made me lose interest in staying here.

There are lingering conversations and concerns for all immigrants in the UK. I've already decided that when we are done with school, we will have to move to a different country. If all else fails, I'll go back to Nigeria and figure out the rest.

You can earn a certain amount of money in England and then do business in a cheaper country (or online business).

Yup. That's what I intend to do. We just want to stack up money for a couple of years and then move to sonewhere else.
I'm thinking about places like Holland, Portugal and some other less expensive parts of Europe

UK is a sinking ship my friend.
You should have gone to Portugal, Spain or something like that first.

Neat.

Scandinavian is not even better for immigrants anymore, the governments speechs have changed x)

If you could, go to Poland or Dubai. They seems like some of the better countries at the moment.

Firstly most people in the UK don’t think like that and recognise either the value of legal immigrants such as yourself or the fact that the problem of illegal immigration is a problem of both domestic and international policies.

My opinion and that of most of the people I know, is that if you’ve got the balls to leave your home and move somewhere in search of a better life then you’re likely to be an asset to society.

Unfortunately UK politics is not unique in the way that the question of immigration is being considered. You’ll find it’s similar in most of the ‘Western World’ right now. When economies and social services begin to struggle then who better to blame than the ‘other people’ particularly when they can’t vote!

Without boring you about the recent history of UK politics the only thing I can assure you is that in the medium term things will get better. The Conservative Party is making immigration a significant talking point for the upcoming election. Once they’ve lost that election (which they almost certainly will and by a massive number of votes) things will hopefully calm down.

Even as a British national I feel your pain. My Mrs is not British and it’s cost us somewhere in the region of £11k to get her settled status.

Appreciate it mate. It's crazy how politicians are so out of touch with reality.

All my colleagues and friends I've met here have been encouraging me. They also think conservatives are going to be smashed in the next election, whenever it comes.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to the horse shit on the TV. It’s just people who are trying to garner attention from the middle age or elderly. Not many other people are watching the TV or news for that matter. It’s a lot of boasting and bullshit.

Legal immigration is much different than illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is what is causing all immigration to become a challenging subject right now. Countries borders are so porous that it’s a wonder they are there at all. At the same time it’s all a pendulum. It’s swung so far to the wrong direction that it’s going to make its way back to center but not until it swings in the opposite direction which will also be challenging.

I’ve heard that the UAE is a really important and up and coming area of the world and it sounds like it might be more up your alley temperature wise. You should give it a look man!

I am so sorry you have to go through all of that. A lot of people don’t know this and they’d do anything to get out of this country. I have also been looking forward to doing my masters abroad and lately, I have been considering to remove UK from my list of options. Those policies are actually becoming too much and hearing this now, I just don’t know.

And yes, I wish you all the best in every decision you decide to take.
