Fighting sleep in a short trip

Try as you may but you can't truly keep sleep at bay. I've found that the best way to do it is keep my mind active but that doesn't always work out.

As I sit in this crowded bus and tusslining with the Sandman, it's pretty evident that this is a losing battle. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with this battle, so the most I can do is postpone the inevitable.

Good thing about the trip from my new place of work is that it's quite close to home. So the night shift doesn't feel quite as frustrating as the previous one where I had to travel long hours to reach.

I also like this new place because I get to be trained to use some fancy equipment. I'll be driving around in something like a forklift, using a computer, scanning and picking up stuff. Honestly, it feels like I'm in the right place.

My short term plans are to switch from the night shift to the day shift but beyond that, I'm not making any other changes. I'm satisfied with the role and I'd like to stick around for a couple of months, at least.

I came into this country with an open mind looking to explore possibilities. Standing in front of me, is the opportunity to become something more in a company that values employees and offers a friendly work environment.

A quiet plan

I'm thinking about the long term benefits of the job and staying really feels like the best idea. The downside is that I have to work with a very strict travel window with the bus networks but there's very little chance that I'll actually miss my bus.

Besides that, I could simply just buy a bicycle for a few quid and that would permanently solve my movement problem. According to Google map, it's a 25 minute ride from my house to the location, so that's a positive. I get a bike and I'll also be saving money.

Bikes require some level of effort and riding back home at the end of a shift when it is freezing outside is not something that I'd want to experience. Then again, when I eventually switch to the day shift, a bike will make sense.

I need to start racking up holiday hours that I'll cash in when I want to do certifications and stuff. I'll need to rack up the hours through shifts and honestly, I'm just ready to go hard.

I've seen people on bicycles in the winter. I can tell you that on a motorcycle, it's mainly your face and fingers that suffer from contact with the wind. The one thing that makes winter unbearable for me is wind. It cuts through all of your layers and down into your soul to where you are spiritually freezing.

Yeah, getting a bicycle is a good start, and 25min ride is not really bad. It is a starter and it will definitely help you save more money.
